Justice And A Clean Slate

A Maid Heard Screaming Behind The Wall During A Gala

Six months later, the morning sun poured through the massive bay windows of the newly renovated Sterling family residence.

Julian: Elena! Look at the painting I finished in art class!

Julian ran into the sunlit breakfast nook, waving a bright watercolor paper showing a big house under a giant smiling sun.

Elena: Wow, Julian! That blue on the roof looks incredible.

Julian: See the person standing by the door with the silver tray? That's you!

Arthur walked in from the patio holding two steaming cups of coffee, wearing casual jeans and a simple linen shirt.

Arthur: Morning, Elena. Did the contractor finish replacing all the ventilation grates upstairs?

Elena: Yes, Mr. Sterling. Every single vent has been converted to open decorative woodwork with safety latches.

Arthur: Good. I never want to see an iron bar or sealed duct in this house again.

Arthur handed Elena a mug, sitting down beside his son at the oak table.

Arthur: Robert called from the courthouse about an hour ago.

Elena: Is the final sentencing complete?

Arthur: Fourteen years without possibility of parole for Victoria. And her business partners took plea deals for restitution.

Elena: At least Julian will never have to worry about looking over his shoulder again.

Arthur: Thanks to you. That brings me to what I wanted to discuss this morning.

Arthur pulled an official blue folder from his briefcase and slid it across the table toward Elena.

Elena: Mr. Sterling, what is this? You've already paid me a generous bonus for my catering shift.

Arthur: Open it, Elena.

Elena carefully lifted the ribbon, skimming the legal title at the top of the crisp white pages.

Elena: The Sterling Family Foundation... Executive Director of Child Advocacy?

Arthur: Julian's mother always wanted our charity trust to directly protect vulnerable children from abuse and domestic exploitation.

Julian: Daddy said you're going to have an office right next to our playroom!

Elena: Mr. Sterling, I worked as a banquet server to pay my night-school tuition. I don't have corporate experience.

Arthur: You have something no corporate degree can teach, Elena. You have courage, integrity, and eyes that refuse to ignore someone in pain.

Elena felt warm tears prick the corners of her eyes as she looked down at Julian's happy, healthy face.

Elena: Are you completely certain about this?

Arthur: I've never been more certain of anything in my life. The job is yours, along with a full scholarship to finish your master's degree.

Julian: Say yes, Elena! Please say yes!

Elena wiped a joyful tear from her cheek, smiling brightly as she reached across the table to take Arthur's hand.

Elena: Yes. I accept.
