Richard practically sprinted out the front door, his expensive leather shoes slipping briefly on the polished gravel driveway as he fled toward his car.
Sarah closed the heavy wooden door with a quiet, decisive click, turning the heavy brass deadbolt into place.
The silence in the grand foyer was absolute, save for the soft, steady breathing of her daughter in her arms.
Sarah: We're safe now, baby. They're all gone.
Emma: No more mean grandpa?
Sarah: No more mean grandpa. Never again.
Sarah carried Emma into the bright, sunlit kitchen at the back of the house, far away from the wreckage of the dining room.
She set the toddler gently on the marble island counter, pulling a box of fresh strawberries and a warm plate of roasted chicken from the refrigerator.
Sarah: Here you go, my sweet girl. Eat as much as you want.
Emma’s eyes lit up as she grabbed a strawberry, taking a big bite while juice trickled down her tiny chin.
Emma: Mmmm! Good, Mommy!
Sarah smiled, tears finally welling in her eyes as she wiped her daughter’s chin with a paper towel.
Her phone began to vibrate violently against the counter, displaying her husband David's name and photo across the screen.
She answered it, placing it on speaker mode while keeping her eyes fixed on her eating daughter.
David: Sarah?! What the hell is going on?! My father just called me screaming that you slapped him and kicked everyone out!
Sarah: Your father gave our two-year-old daughter an empty bone in a metal dish and laughed while she cried from hunger, David.
There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line.
David: Look... my dad has a weird sense of humor, okay? He was probably just ribbing her! You didn't have to throw a temper tantrum and flip the table!
Sarah: A weird sense of humor?
David: He's an old-fashioned guy, Sarah! You know how he is! You totally humiliated him in front of my uncles!
Sarah’s hand tightened around the edge of the counter until her knuckles turned white.
Sarah: You’re defending him. After what he did to Emma.
David: I’m just saying you overreacted! And what’s this nonsense about my flight being redirected? I'm stuck at the airfield in Fort Worth!
Sarah: The driver at the airfield has a courier package for you, David. Inside that package is a copy of our separation agreement and the foreclosure notice for your private accounts.
David: What?! Foreclosure?! Sarah, what are you talking about?!
Sarah: I know about the fifty thousand dollars you stole from Emma's college trust fund to cover your father's gambling debts.
David gasped sharply over the line, his confident tone instantly evaporating into panicked stammering.
David: Sarah... wait... I can explain that! It was just a temporary loan! Dad was going to pay it back with interest once the commercial deal cleared!
Sarah: The commercial deal is dead, David. I filed the environmental violation report with the city council this morning.
David: You... you killed Dad's development project?! Are you insane?! That was going to save our family from bankruptcy!
Sarah: No, David. That was going to save YOUR family's fraudulent lifestyle. My daughter and I are done funding your cruelty.
