The grand dining hall of the mansion was glowing beneath crystal chandeliers when a little girl walked through the towering doors, clutching a small cloth-wrapped treasure in both hands. She looked nervous, but there was determination in her eyes. Inside the cloth was an heirloom sapphire ring, the only thing her missing mother had left behind.
The girl slowly uncovered the ring and whispered that her mommy had given it to her so she could find her grandfather. Before she could explain anything else, a wealthy blonde woman in an elegant evening gown stormed toward her. She grabbed at the girl's arms and accused her of stealing the family's jewelry.
The girl stumbled backward and fell onto the cold marble floor. The guests around the dining table stared in shock as the woman called her a street beggar and demanded that security remove her.

An elderly patriarch named Richard suddenly stepped forward. He rushed to the frightened child, lifted her into his arms, and stared fiercely at the woman. The little girl was trembling against his chest.

Richard's expression softened.

The officers escorted the woman away as the guests watched in stunned silence. But before leaving, Richard asked the little girl one question.
“Where is your mother?”
The girl's face suddenly changed.
“She told me she was hiding because that woman was looking for her.”
Richard froze.
