The glass shattered across the floor with a terrifying crack that echoed down the quiet clinic hallway.
Claire lay unconscious on the freezing linoleum tiles, her hospital gown bunched around her trembling knees.
Above her stood Evelyn, eyes wild with hatred, raising her pointed leather heel directly over Claire's swollen belly.
Evelyn: You will never bring that child into my family.
Evelyn: You thought you could trap my son with a baby? Not on my watch, little girl.
Her heel hung suspended in the air, ready to strike downward with sickening force.
Suddenly, the heavy door flew open, slamming against the plaster wall with a thunderous bang.
Mark: What the hell are you doing?!
Mark rushed into the room, his eyes scanning the fractured glass, his wife collapsed on the floor, and his own mother poised like an executioner.
Evelyn: Mark! Wait!
Evelyn: Wait! It is not what you think!
Mark: Get away from her!
Mark lunged forward, grabbing Evelyn by the arm and shoving her violently back toward the examination bed.
Evelyn: She tripped, Mark! She tripped and fell into the tray!
Mark: Don't lie to me!
Mark: I saw exactly what you were doing to her!
His chest heaved with pure rage as he stood between his defenseless wife and the woman who had raised him.
Evelyn: You're choosing this trash over your own mother?
Mark: Look up, Evelyn.
Mark raised his arm, pointing directly at the small glass dome mounted in the corner of the ceiling.
Mark: That camera caught every single second.
Evelyn's face drained of all color as the red light on the ceiling blinked silently back at her.
She backed away, realizing that decades of secrets were about to unravel in an instant.
