The Secret In The Will

A Mother In Law Caught Red Handed In The Hospital Room

The rhythmic beeping of the hospital monitor filled the sterile private room at Saint Jude's Hospital.

Claire rested against the raised pillows, an IV needle taped securely to the back of her hand.

Mark: The doctor said the medication they pumped into your stomach neutralized the compound.

Claire: Did they find out what it was?

Mark: Concentrated pennyroyal extract. It induces premature labor and causes organ stress in high doses.

Claire closed her eyes, tears spilling down her cheeks.

Claire: She really wanted my baby dead, Mark. She wanted to kill our child.

Mark: I will never let her near you again. The judge already signed a permanent protective order from jail.

The door tapped lightly, and an elderly man in a gray wool suit stepped inside holding a leather briefcase.

Mr. Sterling: Mark. Claire. Thank goodness you both survived that ordeal.

Mark: Mr. Sterling? What are you doing here? I thought you retired from handling the family estate.

Mr. Sterling: When I heard Evelyn was booked on felony assault charges, I knew it was time to come forward.

Claire: Come forward with what?

The attorney sat down on the chair beside the bed, clicking open his briefcase with a sharp snap.

Mr. Sterling: With your father's true last will and testament, Mark.

Mark: My father's will was settled five years ago. Evelyn inherited the controlling interest in the corporation.

Mr. Sterling: That was the provisional document. Your father, Arthur, had deep suspicions about his wife long before he passed.

Mark: What kind of suspicions?

Mr. Sterling: Arthur knew Evelyn was obsessed with status and money. He added an ironclad codicil that became active only under specific conditions.

Mr. Sterling pulled out a thick document stamped with an embossed red seal.

Mr. Sterling: The condition was simple. The moment Mark Vance married and fathered a child, eighty percent of the entire estate transfers directly to the child's mother and child.

Claire gasped, looking at Mark in pure astonishment.

Claire: To me? But his father never even met me.

Mr. Sterling: Arthur wrote: 'To the woman my son chooses, to ensure she can never be discarded or manipulated by my wife.'

Mark: Evelyn knew this.

Mr. Sterling: She discovered the safe deposit box containing this document three weeks ago.

Mark: That's why she suddenly showed up at our house pretending to make peace.

Claire: She offered to help with the nursery... she brought over homemade soup and teas...

Mr. Sterling: If there was no child, the inheritance would remain under Evelyn's sole management until Mark turned forty-five.

Mark: She tried to murder my child to save her bank account.

Mr. Sterling: Exactly. And now that she has been charged with a violent felony against an heir, the forfeiture clause is triggered immediately.

Claire: What does that mean for Evelyn?

Mr. Sterling: It means she is completely broke. The mansion, the offshore accounts, the investments—they all belong to you and your child.

Mark took Claire's trembling hand into both of his own, his voice steady with resolve.

Mark: She tried to crush us to keep her kingdom. Now she has nothing left.
