A New Beginning

My Stepmother Claimed Dad Died Broke Until The Lawyer Opened His Final Safe

The heavy doors closed behind Victoria, leaving only Maya, Julian, and Arthur Vance in the quiet boardroom.

Julian: Maya... I don't know what to say. I honestly thought Dad abandoned us all.

Maya: You chose to believe her lies because it was easier than visiting him in that tiny room, Julian.

Julian bowed his head, wiping a tear from his cheek with the back of his sleeve.

Julian: You're right. I was a coward. I enjoyed the luxury cars and the penthouse suite while you carried him through the worst days.

Arthur Vance: Julian, your signature was forged on the primary Cayman documents, according to the handwriting analysis. You won't face criminal charges, but your executive position is terminated.

Julian: I understand. I will pack my office and hand in my company badges before noon today.

Maya looked at her stepbrother, seeing the broken young man beneath the expensive suit.

Maya: You don't have to leave the company entirely, Julian.

Julian looked up, stunned by her calm words.

Julian: After everything that happened? After how I treated you when you came to ask for his tools?

Maya: Dad believed you had a good heart before Victoria poisoned your mind. But you will work on the warehouse floor like everyone else, earning an honest hourly wage.

Julian: I'll take it. I swear I'll work hard, Maya. Thank you.

Arthur Vance smiled warmly, reaching into his leather briefcase one last time.

Arthur Vance: There is one final item David asked me to hand deliver to you in person, Maya.

Arthur placed a small, velvet-lined mahogany box into Maya's trembling hands.

Maya: What is inside this box, Mr. Vance?

Arthur Vance: Open it, my dear.

Maya lifted the delicate brass clasp. Resting on blue velvet was her grandmother's silver locket, alongside a handwritten note in her father's familiar, slanted handwriting.

Maya: "To my brave daughter Maya: No wealth on earth compares to your honesty. Build this company with kindness, and never let greed steal your soul. Love, Dad."

Tears finally broke past Maya's lashes, spilling down her cheeks as she clutched the silver locket against her chest.

Arthur Vance: Welcome home, Miss Sterling. Your executive team is waiting for your first official address in the auditorium downstairs.

Maya wiped away her tears, stood up tall, and walked toward the boardroom doors with her father's locket clasped firmly in her hand.
