The mahogany doors opened wide, and two uniformed Chicago police officers stepped into the room alongside a tall woman in a dark charcoal suit.
Detective Ruiz: Victoria Sterling? I am Detective Ruiz with the Cook County Special Prosecutions Bureau.
Victoria rose from her chair, her voice trembling with panic as she backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Victoria: What is the meaning of this intrusion? This is a private executive conference room! Get out!
Detective Ruiz: We have an active felony arrest warrant for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and elder financial abuse.
Victoria: Julian, call our defense attorney on speed dial! Tell him to file an emergency writ of habeas corpus right now!
Julian stood motionless by his leather chair, staring down at the forged signature on the Cayman transfer papers.
Julian: I am not calling anyone for you, Mom.
Victoria: Julian! I did all of this to protect your future! How dare you turn on your own mother?
Julian: You did not do this for me. You used my name to steal from a dying man and let his daughter starve in a basement.
Detective Ruiz stepped forward, unhooking a pair of stainless steel handcuffs from her leather utility belt.
Detective Ruiz: Turn around and place your hands behind your back, Mrs. Sterling.
Victoria: Do not touch me! Do you have any idea who I am? I sit on three museum boards!
The detective took Victoria's wrist with calm, firm pressure, spinning her around and clicking the cold steel cuffs shut around her wrists.
Detective Ruiz: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
Maya watched in silence as the officers escorted her stepmother toward the hallway. Victoria's heels dragged along the carpet as she shouted threats at the ceiling.
Victoria: You will rot in that basement, Maya! You hear me? You have nothing!
The elevator doors chimed in the corridor, followed by the heavy thud of the brass boardroom doors closing shut once again.
Julian: Maya... I do not know what to say. I swear to God I had no idea she stole Dad's medicine funds.
Maya: You did not ask questions because you liked the sports car and the penthouse apartment, Julian.
Julian bowed his head, wiping a tear from his cheek with the back of his expensive silk cuff.
Julian: You are right. I was a coward. I let her poison everything because it was easier than looking at the truth.
Arthur Vance: Julian, the state prosecutor's office has confirmed your signature was traced via an unauthorized stamp. You will not face criminal charges, but your tenure as vice president is terminated immediately.
Julian: I understand. I will empty my desk and turn over my security badges to front desk reception before noon.
Julian turned toward the door, his shoulders slumped in total defeat, but Maya's voice stopped him in his tracks.
Maya: Wait, Julian.
Julian turned around slowly, looking at his stepsister with red, swollen eyes.
Julian: Why? After how I spoke to you when you walked into this room today, you should throw me out onto the street.
Maya: Dad always believed you had a decent heart before Victoria took total control of you. You are not keeping the vice presidency, but you are not going to prison either.
Julian stared at her, completely stunned by the calm mercy in her eyes.
Maya: If you want to stay in this company, you will clock in at the assembly warehouse on Monday morning at six sharp, earning fifteen dollars an hour like every other worker.
Julian: I will do it. I swear on my life I will work every single shift, Maya. Thank you.
Arthur Vance smiled warmly, reaching deep into the front compartment of his leather briefcase.
Arthur Vance: You handled that with remarkable grace, Maya. Your father would have been extraordinarily proud.
Maya: Did Dad leave anything else in the safe, Arthur?
Arthur Vance: Yes, Maya. The most important piece of his entire life.
Arthur placed both hands firmly on the clasp of his briefcase, ready to reveal what David had guarded so fiercely.
