The afternoon sun poured through the arched glass windows of the estate library, illuminating rows of leather-bound books.
Toby was sitting on a plush velvet armchair, happily munching on a sandwich brought by the estate chef.
Sadie sat across from Roman's desk, her fingers intertwined tightly in her lap.
Roman slid a crisp, newly printed contract across the dark wood table toward her.
Roman: Read the title at the top, Sadie.
Sadie leaned forward, squinting slightly at the bold black lettering at the header of the page.
Sadie: Directorship of the Sterling Children's Foundation?
Roman: That is correct.
Sadie: Mr. Sterling, I don't understand. I am a house maid. I don't have a business degree or executive experience!
Roman: I don't care about degrees, Sadie. I employ three hundred Harvard graduates who don't have half the courage you displayed today.
Sadie's heart beat wildly against her ribs as she looked between the paper and Roman's intense gaze.
Sadie: But what would I even do in this foundation?
Roman: You would manage the private educational trust I am establishing for underprivileged families across Texas.
Sadie: That sounds like a million-dollar responsibility...
Roman: It is a twenty-million-dollar fund. And you will be the one deciding where the grants go.
Sadie shook her head, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the offer.
Sadie: Why me? Why would you trust me with something so enormous?
Roman: Because you refused to compromise your integrity, even when someone held a gun to your family's future.
Roman tapped the contract with his pen, pointing to the compensation section near the bottom.
Roman: This contract includes a full annual salary, private medical coverage, and a trust fund guaranteeing Toby's tuition through university.
Toby stopped chewing his sandwich, looking over with wide, hopeful eyes.
Toby: College? I get to go to real college, Sadie?
Sadie's breath hitched in her throat, a fresh wave of tears spilling over her cheeks as she covered her mouth.
Sadie: Toby... yes, baby. You get to go anywhere you want.
Roman: And there is one more detail, Sadie.
Sadie looked back at Roman, her vision blurred by tears of disbelief and overwhelming relief.
Sadie: What is it?
Roman: The guest cottage at the north edge of the estate. It has three bedrooms, a private yard, and a view of the lake.
Sadie: What about it?
Roman: It's yours. As long as you manage the foundation, you and Toby will live there permanently.
Sadie sat completely frozen in the chair, her mind unable to comprehend the sheer scale of the miracle unfolding before her.
Just two hours ago, she had been on her knees on a cold floor, waiting for her world to be torn apart.
Now, she held the keys to a life she had never even dared to dream about in her quietest moments.
Sadie: Mr. Sterling... how can I ever repay you for this?
Roman stood up from behind the desk, walking around to offer his hand once more.
Roman: You don't repay family, Sadie. You just take care of each other.
Sadie reached out, grasping his hand firmly as she stood up with a radiant, tearful smile.
Sadie: I will never let you down. I promise you with all my heart.
Roman: I know you won't. Now take your brother, go look at your new home, and let the past stay in the past.
Sadie walked over to Toby, scooping him up into a tight hug as the little boy giggled with pure joy.
As they walked out of the great library into the warm sunshine of the courtyard, the dark shadows of the morning vanished entirely, replaced by the dawn of a completely new life.
