Mark shifted uncomfortably on his feet, avoiding my eyes. He glanced around at his wealthy business partners who were now watching the confrontation closely. Instead of defending his daughter, he leaned in and spoke in a harsh, low whisper.
Mark: Rachel, just take Lily and leave through the back entrance. We can talk about custody arrangements next week. Don't ruin Chloe's night.
Rachel: Ruin her night? YOU LET HER HIDE YOUR OWN DAUGHTER?!
My voice boomed across the ballroom. The music seemed to fade into the background as dozens of heads turned toward us. Society wives in silk dresses whispered behind their hands, and Mark’s wealthy father lowered his champagne glass in shock.
Mark: Stop yelling! You’re acting completely unhinged!
Rachel: I’m acting unhinged? You spineless coward! Your child was crying under a dusty tablecloth while you were sipping two-hundred-dollar whiskey!
Chloe stepped right up to my face, her eyes flashing with pure venom. The delicate, sweet act she put on for Mark’s family was totally gone.
Chloe: Listen to me, you pathetic bitter ex. This wedding cost over three hundred thousand dollars! My parents paid for this entire venue, the catered dinner, and the estate reservation! I JUST WANTED ONE PERFECT NIGHT!
Rachel: So you humiliated a baby to get it?
Chloe: She’s not my family! She’s a leftover distraction from your failed marriage! Mark agreed that tonight was about US, not your baggage!
Rachel: Baggage? You just called his child baggage?
I looked at Mark, waiting for him to snap, waiting for him to say something—anything—to defend his own blood. But Mark just stood there, looking down at his polished shoes, completely terrified of displeasing Chloe and her wealthy parents.
Mark: Rachel... Chloe’s just stressed. It’s been a long day. Just go...
Rachel: You really are nothing without her money, are you?
Chloe: Get this trash out of my wedding before I have security throw both of you onto the street!
Chloe raised her hand, motioning toward two large security guards standing near the front doors. Lily buried her face deeper into my shoulder, sobbing louder. Fueled by an overwhelming wave of pure, unadulterated motherly fury, I took one step forward. My right hand flew across the air with every bit of weight and anger I had built up inside me.
A sharp, loud crack echoed through the venue as my palm connected squarely with Mark’s face.
The entire room gasped in unified shock.
