Daniel: “Emma, look at me. Daddy's here. You're safe now.”
The little girl clung tightly to her father's shirt, crying so hard that her small shoulders shook.
Daniel held her in his arms inside the bright family kitchen, trying to understand why she was so terrified.
His wife, Claire, stood several feet away with tears in her eyes.
Claire: “Daniel, please listen to me.”
Daniel: “What happened to her?”
Claire opened her mouth, but no words came out.
Daniel looked at his daughter again.
Daniel: “Sophie, can you tell Daddy what happened?”
The little girl buried her face against his chest.
Sophie: “I don't want to go back.”
Daniel's expression immediately changed.
Daniel: “Go back where?”
Sophie pointed toward the hallway.
Sophie: “The room.”
Claire stepped forward.
Claire: “Daniel, she is frightened. That's all.”
Daniel: “Frightened of what?”
Claire: “She had a bad afternoon.”
Daniel looked at his wife.
Daniel: “You called me at work and told me everything was fine.”
Claire wiped her cheek.
Claire: “I didn't want you to panic.”
Daniel: “Our daughter is shaking in my arms.”
Sophie suddenly lifted her head.
Sophie: “Daddy, don't be mad at Mommy.”
Daniel stared at her.
Daniel: “Why would I be mad at Mommy?”
Sophie looked toward Claire.
Sophie: “Because she didn't do it.”
Claire's face went pale.
Daniel: “Didn't do what?”
Sophie began crying again.
Sophie: “She didn't hurt me.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
Daniel: “I never said you hurt her.”
Claire stepped backward.
Claire: “Daniel, please.”
Daniel slowly put Sophie down.
Daniel: “I want the truth.”
Sophie grabbed his hand.
Sophie: “Daddy, Grandma told me not to tell you.”
Daniel froze.
Daniel: “Grandma?”
Claire immediately shook her head.
Claire: “Sophie doesn't understand what she heard.”
Daniel: “Where is my mother?”
Claire: “She left.”
Daniel: “When?”
Claire: “About an hour ago.”
Daniel looked toward the front door.
Then he noticed something on the kitchen counter.
It was his mother's handbag.
She never went anywhere without it.
Daniel: “Why is Mom's bag here?”
Claire said nothing.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a folded piece of paper and an old photograph.
The photograph showed Daniel as a young boy standing beside his mother.
But there was another child in the picture.
A little girl.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Daniel: “Who is this?”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
Claire: “Daniel, I was going to tell you.”
Daniel: “Tell me what?”
Sophie quietly answered before her mother could.
Sophie: “Grandma said you had a sister.”
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
Suddenly, the family secret was no longer something he could ignore.
