Julian: Look at the pendant! It's shining! What is happening to the medallion?
Eldridge: That... that is impossible. It is just an old piece of antique jewelry his mother kept in a wooden box!
Clara: No, Eldridge! Look closely at the crest! That is the lost Royal Seal of Texas!
The giant white lion slammed its heavy front paws into the soft sand just inches away from Toby's dusty shoes. The force of its landing kicked up a thick cloud of dust that temporarily obscured the toddler from the crowd's view. A suffocating silence fell over the entire arena as the dust slowly began to clear.
Julian: Is he... is he still alive? I can't see him through the sand!
Eldridge: Of course he isn't. No human can withstand the full charge of an apex predator.
Clara: Oh God, please no! Somebody get a rifle down there! Help the child!
As the golden dust settled in the hot afternoon air, the crowd gasped in unison. The massive white lion was not attacking. The giant beast had brought its massive head down to the level of the sand, its snout hovering barely an inch away from the boy's chest. Its ears were flattened back, not in anger, but in complete submission.
Toby: See? I told you he was a nice kitty.
Julian: Father... look at the beast. It is bowing down to him!
Eldridge: Get up, you useless animal! Attack him! Shoot the boy's legs if you have to, guards!
Clara: Don't you dare touch a single hair on that child's head! Look at his neck!
Underneath the boy's collar, the golden lion medallion began to emit a bright, rhythmic pulse of golden light. The light illuminated the intricate engravings on the heavy gold face, projecting the faint outline of a roaring lion crest onto the surrounding sand floor. The white lion closed its yellow eyes and let out a soft, deep purr that sounded like distant thunder.
Julian: BY THE GODS! THE ROYAL SEAL OF TEXAS!
Eldridge: Shut your mouth, Julian! There is no such thing as a magical seal! It's a cheap battery trick!
Clara: A battery trick? That medallion has been locked in the family vault for over eighty years! It only activates when worn by the direct legal heir of the founding estate!
Toby: My mama said the lion keeps the bad men away from our home.
The four-year-old child reached out his tiny, dirt-stained right hand and gently placed his palm onto the soft white fur of the lion's snout. The giant predator did not flinch. It nudged its massive head forward, gently pressing against the small child's palm as if greeting an old king.
Eldridge: This cannot be happening! My lawyers assured me the original bloodline died out when my brother passed away in the crash!
Julian: Your lawyers lied to you, Father. Or maybe you paid them to hide the truth about my nephew!
