“Stay here with Ava.”
Daniel grabbed his coat.
“Where are you going?” Caroline asked.
“The hospital.”
“Your uncle is outside.”
“I know.”
Daniel walked toward the elevator.
The doors opened.
Inside stood an older man wearing a dark burgundy uniform.
He looked directly at Daniel.
“Mr. Reed.”
Daniel stopped.
“Do I know you?”
The man smiled.
“Not personally.”
“Then how do you know my name?”
“Because your father asked me to watch over his family.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Thomas.”
“What do you know about Rebecca?”
Thomas's expression became serious.
“Everything.”
Daniel stepped into the elevator.
“Then tell me.”
Thomas pressed the button.
“Your father knew he was being betrayed.”
“By my uncle?”
“Yes.”
“What did he do?”
“He created a private trust for Emily and placed the original documents somewhere your uncle could never find them.”
Daniel frowned.
“Where?”
Thomas looked at him.
“With Rebecca.”
Daniel's eyes widened.
“The woman in the hospital.”
Thomas nodded.
“She has the original trust documents.”
Daniel suddenly understood why someone had been paying Rebecca's medical bills.
“My wife wasn't hiding Rebecca because she wanted to.”
Thomas shook his head.
“She was protecting her.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“And my uncle?”
“He has been searching for those documents for years.”
The elevator doors opened.
Daniel stepped out.
“Then we need to get to the hospital before him.”
Thomas followed.
At the hospital, Daniel rushed into Rebecca's room.
She was awake.
Weak, but conscious.
“Who are you?” she whispered.
Daniel walked closer.
“I'm Daniel.”
Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.
“Your father's son.”
Daniel nodded.
“And you're my sister's mother.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“You found out.”
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Your father was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“That your uncle would hurt Emily to get control of the trust.”
Daniel looked at the hospital bed.
“Where is Emily?”
Rebecca smiled weakly.
“She's safe.”
“Where?”
“She is the one who sent your daughter the photograph.”
Daniel froze.
“Emily contacted Ava?”
Rebecca nodded.
“She knew your wife would never risk telling you directly.”
Daniel looked down.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Ava had not accidentally discovered the photograph.
Emily had deliberately sent it to the one person she believed would force the truth into the open.
Daniel's phone rang.
It was Caroline.
“Daniel, your uncle is here.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“Keep Ava away from him.”
He ended the call.
Thomas stepped beside him.
“Your father left one final instruction.”
“What?”
“He said the truth would only matter if the family chose each other over the money.”
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
“Then that's what I'm going to do.”
He walked out of the room.
His uncle stood at the end of the hallway.
“Daniel.”
“Don't come any closer.”
His uncle smiled.
“You have no idea what you're getting involved in.”
Daniel held up the old photograph.
“I know exactly what I'm involved in.”
His uncle's smile disappeared.
“Where did you get that?”
“From my father.”
“Your father is dead.”
“But his truth isn't.”
Security officers approached.
Daniel handed them the documents Thomas had provided.
The investigation that followed uncovered years of attempts to locate and control Emily's trust.
Daniel's uncle was eventually forced to answer questions about financial manipulation and forged documents.
Rebecca recovered slowly.
And Emily finally came home.
One evening, Daniel sat at the dining table with Caroline, Ava, Rebecca, and Emily.
Ava looked at her father.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“So Aunt Emily isn't a secret anymore?”
Daniel smiled.
“No, sweetheart.”
Emily reached across the table and held Ava's hand.
“Thank you for showing your dad my picture.”
Ava smiled.
“I was scared.”
“Me too,” Emily said.
Daniel looked at Caroline.
“And I'm sorry I thought you were hiding something because you didn't trust me.”
Caroline smiled through her tears.
“I was trying to protect everyone.”
Daniel reached for her hand.
“Next time, let me help.”
She nodded.
Across the table, Ava looked at the family she had accidentally brought together.
She had only shown her father one photograph.
But that photograph had opened a secret that had been buried for fifteen years.
And in the end, the little girl everyone thought was too young to understand had been the one person brave enough to make her family face the truth.
