The heavy silver faucet gushed water into the stainless steel sink of the Dallas penthouse, but it couldn't drown out the sound of Clara's fast, panicked breathing. She wiped down a crystal wine glass with a damp towel, her hands shaking so hard the glass clinked against the marble counter. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the bright Texas sun beamed over the city skyline, but inside, the air felt freezing cold.
Clara: I didn't touch it. I swear on my mother's life, I didn't touch it.
Evelyn: Don't you dare speak her name in my house! That diamond ring was on my nightstand this morning, and you were the only person in that master suite!
Clara: Mrs. Sterling, please! Check my pockets, check my bag! Look at my hands! I've worked for your family for three years and I've never taken a single penny!
Evelyn Sterling stood in the center of the grand kitchen, her designer dress pristine, her face twisted in absolute disgust. She pointed a manicured finger at Clara's simple black uniform apron, her voice sharp enough to cut glass.
Evelyn: A four-carat cushion-cut diamond doesn't just sprout wings and fly away, Clara! You think because my husband is soft-hearted that you can pull one over on us?
Clara: It's a lie! You degrade me every single day, but I am not a thief!
Before Evelyn could scream back, heavy leather shoes clattered against the hardwood floor. Mark Sterling stepped into the kitchen, his dark suit crisp, his face drawn tight with deep stress. He looked between his trembling maid and his furious wife, his jaw clenched tight.
Mark: What in God's name is going on out here? The neighbors can hear you yelling from down the hall!
Evelyn: Mark, good! Tell this street trash to give back my family heirlooms before I have the police drag her out in handcuffs!
Mark: Evelyn, calm down for one second. Did you actually see her take it?
Evelyn: I don't need to see it! It's gone, and she was in the room!
Mark walked toward his wife, his eyes fixed on her face with an intensity that made Evelyn instantly pause. But the fury in his eyes wasn't directed at Clara—it was burning straight at Evelyn. He grabbed Evelyn's upper arm, his grip firm, ignoring her sudden gasp of surprise as he pulled her closer to the counter.
Mark: Pack your bags and get out! My son will be raised by a decent woman!
Evelyn: What... what are you talking about? Mark, have you lost your mind?! She's the maid!
Mark: I said pack your bags. You're done here, Evelyn.
Evelyn stared in trembling silence, tears finally glinting in her wide, shocked eyes as his words sank in. But Clara stood frozen by the sink, holding a wet rag, completely unaware that the missing diamond ring was only the first piece of a massive lie about to unspool in front of her eyes.
