An hour later, the mansion was quiet again. The police cars had driven away, taking the scammers and the corrupt estate manager into custody. The grand foyer was cleaned, and the late afternoon sun cast a warm golden light through the high stained-glass windows.
Arthur sat in his study behind his massive desk. Across from him sat Clara, holding a sleeping Leo in her arms. The toddler was exhausted from the day's drama, resting peacefully with his hand tucked under Clara's chin.
Arthur: The police have confirmed everything. The whole scheme was orchestrated to steal Leo's inheritance. If it wasn't for today... if it wasn't for how Leo reacted to you, I might have been fooled by their legal paperwork.
Clara: I'm just glad he's safe, Mr. Sterling. That's all that matters to me.
Arthur: You saved my nephew from a life of neglect and abuse, Clara. And you gave him the love his parents couldn't give him after they passed.
Clara lowered her eyes, suddenly feeling nervous. She looked down at her blue uniform, shifting uncomfortably on the soft chair.
Clara: Does this mean... am I fired, Mr. Sterling?
Arthur paused, looking at Clara with a mix of respect and deep gratitude. He opened a drawer in his desk and pulled out a thick set of legal folders, placing them gently on the desk between them.
Arthur: Fire you? Clara, you are the only real family my nephew has in this world. Effective immediately, your employment as a housemaid is terminated.
Clara's heart sank into her chest. Her eyes filled with sudden tears as she looked up.
Clara: Please, Mr. Sterling... don't take him away from me...
Arthur: Let me finish, Clara.
Arthur smiled—a genuine, warm smile that Clara had never seen on his strict face before.
Arthur: You are no longer the maid. I am appointing you as Leo's official legal guardian and head of his personal estate. You will live here in the mansion, not as staff, but as part of this family. You will have a full salary, a budget to manage his upbringing, and full authority over his care.
Clara gasped, covering her mouth with her hand as hot tears spilled down her cheeks. She couldn't believe what she was hearing.
Clara: You... you are granting me custody?
Arthur: Blood makes you related, Clara. But love makes you a mother. Leo chose you long before today. I'm just making it legal.
Leo stirred slightly in Clara's lap, opening his big brown eyes. He looked up at Clara, wiping a tear from her cheek with his soft little hand, smiling innocently.
Leo: Don't cry, Mommy. I'm here.
Clara kissed the top of the boy's head, holding him tight as the dark shadow over the Sterling house finally gave way to bright, lasting hope.
