The Wealthy Heiress Overheard Her Stepmother Selling Her Trust Fund Before Wedding

The heavy polished brass door of the private country club suite was cracked open barely half an inch, letting a sharp bar of amber light cut across the dark hallway carpet.

Elena stood frozen outside, her silver bridal clutch trembling against the white silk of her designer gown.

Inside, crystal champagne flutes clinked over hushed, mocking whispers.

Clara: Did you make sure her lawyer didn't send any revised drafts to her email?

Marcus: Clara, relax. She thinks I spent all morning inspecting the white roses for the terrace garden.

Clara: She has no idea what an asset assignment deed looks like, right?

Marcus: None at all. She still thinks we're signing a standard mutual prenup before the vows tomorrow.

Elena felt her stomach drop straight through the floorboards, her blood turning to pure ice.

That was Marcus. Her fiancé. The man who had held her hand while she wept at her father's gravesite three months ago.

Clara: Charles thought he was clever by locking eighty percent of the commercial logistics firm in a private trust fund for her.

Marcus: He never dreamed we would find the unrecorded codicil in his office wall safe.

Clara: The billionaire buyers in Chicago wired the earnest deposit this morning. Two hundred million dollars cash.

Marcus: And my cut covers every single debt and private mortgage my family owes.

Clara: What about Elena's living allowance after the sale?

Marcus: Give her the mountain cottage upstate and five thousand a month. That will keep her quiet.

Clara: She'll cry for a few days, sign the papers, and accept whatever we offer her.

Marcus: A simple life for a simple girl. Let's make sure the notary is waiting by the head table tonight.

Elena backed away silently, her knuckles turning bone white against her clutch purse.

She reached into her inner coat pocket, feeling the cold steel edges of her backup company cell phone.

Marcus thought he had silenced her by taking her personal phone under the excuse of charging it in his limousine console.

Her thumb tapped the keypad, dialing Arthur Vance, her father’s oldest corporate attorney.

Arthur: Elena? Thank God you called back. Did you check the wire transfer sheets?

Elena: Arthur... bring the federal marshals to the country club right now.

Arthur: Elena, wait! What did you overhear in there?

Elena: They’re selling everything my father built, and they think I’m going to sign my life away tonight.
