The bright summer afternoon in the Dallas suburban backyard felt completely warm, but a sudden ice-cold chill swept over me as I stepped out onto the patio. I was holding two glasses of ice lemonade, ready to relax after a long week at the corporate law firm. Then I heard a soft, frantic splash from the deep end of the swimming pool.

My heart dropped straight to my stomach when I saw my seven-year-old daughter, Lily, sinking beneath the clear blue surface. She was struggling, her small arms thrashing wildly as water rushed over her face. Her wet pink dress weighed her down as she gasped for air. Standing right on the edge of the poolside deck was my older sister, Veronica, wearing a neutral cream outfit and staring down at the water with cold, unbothered eyes.

Mark: HEY! What are you doing?!

I dropped the glasses onto the grass, the glass shattering instantly. I sprinted across the polished wooden deck as fast as my leather dress shoes could carry me. Panic surged through my entire body, making my vision blur at the edges.

Veronica: Relax, Mark, she’s just playing around.

Mark: Move out of my way!

I dove toward the edge of the pool, reaching my arms deep into the water. I grabbed Lily by her small waist and hauled her soaked, trembling body out onto the pool deck. She was coughing violently, clinging to my suit jacket like a lifeline. Water dripped from her hair and down her freckled face as she sobbed hysterically into my chest.

Mark: Shh, baby, I got you. Daddy’s got you. Breathe, Lily, just breathe!

Lily: Daddy... she... she pushed me! She said I didn't belong in this house!

Veronica: She’s lying, Mark! She slipped because she was running on the wet wood!

Lily: No! She kept asking about Mom's life insurance and pushed me when I told her to stop!

I froze. The warm afternoon air suddenly felt thick and suffocating. My sister looked at my trembling daughter, then back at me, her face completely void of remorse or concern.
