Eight-year-old Leo stood in the middle of his family's bright Dallas study room with a heavy wooden mallet gripped tightly in his small hands.
The sunlight poured through the tall windows, lighting up the light wooden bookshelves and pristine marble floors.
Despite the beautiful setting, Leo could only focus on the large wall painting of an American flag hanging above the grand desk.
He pressed his small ear against the canvas, ignoring the dust that settled on his dark red shirt.
A faint, rhythmically tapping sound echoed from behind the drywall.
Leo knew that sound better than anyone else in the house.
It was his grandfather's secret code, a tapping rhythm the old man had taught him during summer fishing trips.
His mother, Sarah, rushed into the study with her phone held high in her hand.
Her face was pale, and her eyes flickered with a sudden wave of sheer terror.
She had been looking for her father-in-law for over three hours, growing more anxious with every passing minute.
His father, Mark, stood near the edge of the desk with a cold, distant expression on his face.
Mark wore a sharp suit, looking like the powerful CEO he was supposed to be.
Yet, his hands twitched nervously at his sides as Leo raised the mallet again.
Mark: Put that tool down this instant, Leo!
Leo: Grandpa is in there, Dad!
Sarah: Mark, why are you shouting at him like that?
Mark: Because he is destroying expensive property in my house!
Sarah: Property does not matter right now!
Leo: I hear his breathing, Mom!
Leo swung the mallet with all the strength his eight-year-old body could gather.
The sharp impact echoed through the high ceilings as the painting frame cracked open.
Mark lunged forward, grabbing Leo's arm with a firm, angry grip to pull him backward.
Sarah stepped between them immediately, her voice rising in protective anger.
Sarah: Do not lay a hand on our son!
Mark: He is losing his mind, Sarah!
Sarah: He is not lying! Look at the tears in his eyes!
Leo: Please, Mom, help me break the frame!
Sarah pushed her husband back, stepping closer to the broken canvas.
She placed her ear against the cracked wood, just like her son had done moments before.
A distinct, muffled gasp came from deep within the hollow structure.
Her heart sank into her stomach as cold sweat broke out across her forehead.
She spun around to face her husband, her eyes wide with shock and utter disbelief.
Sarah: He is not lying! Call nine one one right now!
Mark: Sarah, stop panicking over nothing!
Sarah: I heard him, Mark! What did you do to your own father?!
Mark: Shut your mouth right now!
Mark stepped forward with a fierce glare, his temper boiling over control.
He raised his hand and struck Sarah hard, causing her to stumble back toward the bookshelves.
She clutched her red cheek, completely stunned by the sudden turn of violent anger.
Leo screamed in horror, breaking free from his father's distraction.
He brought the wooden mallet down on the exposed wall latch with one final, desperate hit.
