Sarah stepped into the grand foyer, holding a wrapped birthday present close against her beige trench coat.
She had driven three long hours across the state just to see her daughter on her special day.
The moment her eyes landed on Lily's frosting-covered face, Sarah dropped the gift onto the floor.
Her posture instantly stiffened as intense maternal protective fury boiled up inside her chest.
She marched across the hardwood floor with fast, heavy footsteps toward the messy dining area.
Sarah: Get your filthy hands away from my daughter right now, Brenda!
Brenda turned around slowly, crossing her arms with a fake smile of supreme confidence.
Brenda: You are not welcome in this house, Sarah!
Brenda: You gave up your rights when you moved away from town two years ago!
Sarah: I never gave up my child, and I certainly never gave you permission to hurt her!
Lily ran straight into her mother's open arms, burying her face into the soft trench coat.
Sarah held her daughter tightly, stroking her sweet sticky hair while staring down her rival.
The room remained deathly quiet as the tension between the two women filled the entire space.
Brenda stepped closer, trying to intimidate the biological mother in front of all the gathered guests.
Brenda: Mark left me in charge of this house while he is away on his business trip!
Brenda: What happens under this roof is completely up to my own decision!
Sarah: Mark is a weak man who lets you bully an innocent nine-year-old child!
Sarah: But I am not weak, and this terrible nightmare ends for Lily right now!
Sarah gently lifted Lily's chin to look at her tear-filled, frosting-covered face with deep affection.
Sarah: Go upstairs to your room right now, honey, and wash your face in the bathroom.
Lily: Please don't leave me alone with her, Mommy!
Sarah: I am not going anywhere, sweet girl, I promise you that with my whole heart.
Lily nodded quickly and ran up the grand staircase to escape the awful scene downstairs.
Sarah turned back to Brenda, her eyes sharp like steel as she took one bold step forward.
