The bright Texas sun poured through the high windows of the grand Dallas estate.
Sarah adjusted her apron with trembling fingers as she held a heavy silver tray.
She had taken this job at the estate three months ago out of pure desperation.
The pay was barely enough to cover her rent, but she needed every single dollar.
Her supervisor had warned her about Richard, the wealthy investor visiting from out of town.
Richard was known for his quick temper and his absolute disdain for the working class.
Sarah took a deep breath and stepped into the formal dining room with composure.
The large glass table was set with fine china and expensive crystal glassware.
Richard sat at the head of the table, scowling at his mobile phone.
Sarah: Here is your fresh coffee, sir.
Richard: What took you so long?
Sarah: I was instructed to brew a fresh pot, sir.
Richard: I don't care about your excuses!
Richard stood up violently, knocking his wooden chair backward onto the polished floor.
Sarah took a quick step back, keeping her eyes fixed on the ground.
She knew better than to argue with powerful men like Richard in their own homes.
Richard: You spilled a drop on my designer suit jacket!
Sarah: I am so sorry, let me clean it right away.
Richard: Know your place, you useless maid!
Richard shoved Sarah hard, sending her stumbling back against the edge of the table.
The tray crashed to the ground, shattering fragile porcelain cups across the marble floor.
Sarah lost her footing completely and landed painfully on the hard white surface.
Tears burned in her eyes as she looked up at the angry man standing over her.
She had spent her whole life feeling completely alone and defenseless against such cruelty.
Growing up in foster care had taught her that no one ever came to help her.
Sarah: Please, I didn't mean to drop it!
Richard: You are completely incompetent!
Richard stepped forward again, raised his arm, and threatened to strike her down.
Sarah pulled her knees to her chest and closed her eyes tight, preparing for the worst.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the dining hall burst wide open with a loud thud.
Heavy footsteps echoed rapidly across the polished floor toward the scene of the chaos.
