A Clean Slate For The Future

A Father Discovers What His Stepmother Did To His Daughter

The heavy front doors closed with a solid thud, cutting off Margarethe's shrill screams.

The red and blue emergency lights flashed across the driveway one last time before disappearing down the long private avenue.

Richard let out a long, ragged breath, feeling the weight of the last two years finally lift from his shoulders.

He knelt down on the cold marble floor in front of his daughter.

Richard: Lily, look at me.

Lily looked up, her brown eyes still wet with tears, but the terror was gone.

Lily: Is she really never coming back?

Richard: Never. I promise you, on my life, she will never walk through those doors again.

Lily: I was so scared you would believe her instead of me.

A deep pang of guilt hit Richard right in the chest, and he pulled her into a warm hug.

Richard: I am so sorry, sweetheart. I should have seen what was happening. I should have protected you better.

Lily: You came down the stairs, Daddy. You stopped her.

Richard: I will always stop anyone who tries to hurt you. Always.

Officer Jackson walked over, holding an ice pack wrapped in a clean linen cloth.

Officer Jackson: For the young miss's cheek, Mr. Sterling.

Richard: Thank you, Jackson. I appreciate you keeping the doors secure.

Officer Jackson: Always, sir. We're just glad she's safe.

Richard gently pressed the cool cloth against Lily's bruised cheek.

Richard: Does that hurt?

Lily: A little bit. But it feels better now.

Richard stood up, holding Lily's small hand tightly in his own.

Richard: Come on. Let's go up to your room and pack your favorite toys.

Lily: Are we leaving?

Richard: We're taking a long vacation to our ranch in Montana. Just you and me.

Lily's face brightened with a tiny, hopeful smile.

Lily: Can we ride the horses like Mom used to take us?

Richard: Every single day. And when we come back, this house is going to have a fresh coat of paint and completely new locks.

Lily: And no more locked doors from the outside?

Richard: Never again. Your door stays wide open whenever you want.

They walked past the shattered pieces of the crystal vase lying forgotten on the foyer floor.

The glass meant nothing anymore. The money in the trust was secure.

Lily leaned her head against her father's arm as they walked up the grand staircase together.

For the first time in years, the Sterling mansion felt like a safe home.
