Ethan Miller pulled his luxury car into the long driveway of his mansion.
He expected a quiet afternoon after finishing his high-stakes business meetings in the city.
Instead, he stepped through the heavy double doors into total chaos.
His young daughter, Lily, ran across the polished marble floor of the grand foyer.
Tears streamed down her pale cheeks as her small frame shook with fear.
His new wife, Victoria, chased right behind the little girl with a sharp glare.
Victoria grabbed Lily's arm tightly to stop her from running any further.
"Be quiet, you little brat," Victoria hissed under her breath.
"Daddy, Mommy is trapped down there!" Lily screamed toward the front door.
Ethan dropped his leather briefcase onto the floor and rushed into the room.
"Get your hands off her right now!" Ethan shouted at his wife.
Victoria immediately let go of the girl and took a quick step back.
Lily scrambled across the slick marble floor toward a dark wooden border.
"Stay away from that latch!" Victoria yelled, her voice suddenly high and panicked.
Ethan dropped to his knees right beside his frightened daughter.
He noticed a tiny metallic latch hidden along the decorative wooden floorboards.
With a hard yank, Ethan pulled open a heavy wooden trapdoor built into the floor.
A dark, cold staircase led down into an unused storage cellar below the mansion.
"Clara! I'm right here!" Ethan called out into the dark space.
A weak voice sobbed from the shadows beneath the heavy floorboards.
Ethan reached his arms deep into the opening to help the woman up.
He pulled his former wife, Clara, out onto the bright foyer floor.
Clara's clothes were disheveled, and her hands trembled as she hugged Ethan tight.
Lily clung to her father's back, crying tears of relief as Clara gasped for air.
"She locked me down there, Ethan," Clara cried softly, pointing at Victoria.
Lily pointed her finger directly at the stunned stepmother standing nearby.
"She tried to hide Mommy forever so she could take the inheritance!" Lily shouted.
Victoria took two steps backward across the bright foyer in pure terror.
"Ethan, please, she is lying to you!" Victoria pleaded, raising her hands defensively.
Ethan stood up slowly, his jaw clenched tight as intense anger filled his chest.
He realized Victoria had plotted against his family for the money all along.
"You are finished in this house!" Ethan growled, stepping toward his scheming wife.
He grabbed Victoria by the arm and forced her down to the marble floor.
"You are going straight to federal prison for this," Ethan said firmly.
The police arrived moments later to take Victoria away in handcuffs forever.
