The Truth Room Two Hundred Four

A Homeless Woman Sings a Song That Exposes Family Secrets

Mark dropped his umbrella onto the wet city pavement.

The cold rain splattered against his dark business suit.

He walked closer to the two women standing near the bench.

Mark: Sarah? Is that really you speaking?

Sarah: Yes, Mark. It is me.

Evelyn: Do not listen to this unwashed liar, Mark!

Sarah: She lied to you for four long years, Mark!

Mark looked between his wife and the mother holding Lily.

His mind raced back to the hospital four years ago.

He remembered the doctors telling him his wife had died.

He remembered Evelyn being there to comfort his grief.

Evelyn had brought home a newborn baby girl shortly after.

She had claimed the child was an orphan needing a home.

Mark had trusted Evelyn and married her a year later.

Now the pieces of a terrible puzzle fell into place.

Mark: Sarah, they told me you passed away in childbirth.

Sarah: Evelyn paid someone to fake my medical records!

Evelyn: She is making up wild stories to get money!

Sarah: Check the matching lockets if you do not believe me!

Mark knelt down on the wet ground next to Lily.

He looked at the small silver heart in Sarah's hand.

It fit perfectly with the silver piece around Lily's neck.

He saw the matching star marks on both their wrists.

Tears mixed with the rain on Mark's strong face.

He looked up at Evelyn with fury in his eyes.

Mark: You stole my family from me!

Evelyn: I gave you a family when you had nothing!

Mark: You lied to me and took my child from her mother!

Evelyn turned around to run toward her parked car.

Mark stepped forward quickly and grabbed her shoulder tightly.

Mark: You are not going anywhere after what you did!

Evelyn: Let go of me right now, Mark!

Mark: Someone call 911 immediately!

A small crowd of pedestrians had gathered on the sidewalk.

A man holding a coffee phone quickly dialed the police.

Sarah held Lily tightly against her warm chest.

Lily wrapped her small arms around Sarah's wet neck.

Lily: Are you my real mommy from the song?

Sarah: Yes, my sweet girl. I am your real mommy.

Evelyn struggled against Mark's strong hold on her arm.

She knew her sweet life of luxury was over now.
