Julian stared down at the worn golden falcon carved on the heavy pendant, his hands trembling so hard the chain clattered against his cufflinks.
Vanessa: Julian, drop that dirty piece of trash right now and get back up here!
Julian: Where did you get this, son? Tell me right now.
Leo: My mom gave it to me before the car rolled down the hill five years ago.
Vanessa: He stole it! Julian, someone looted the crash site and sold it to a pawn shop downtown!
Julian: Nobody looted anything, Vanessa. This locket was hand-carved in solid gold for my grandfather.
Vanessa: You're losing your mind on our wedding day! Look at all these important people watching us!
Julian: There are only two in existence. One is locked inside my estate vault in Highland Park.
Leo: And Mom put the other one around my neck so I would never forget who I was.
Vanessa: He is lying, Julian! He's a con artist coached by your corporate rivals to ruin our business merger!
Julian: Shut up, Vanessa. Just shut your mouth.
Vanessa: Excuse me?! How dare you speak to me like that at the altar in front of four hundred people!
Julian pressed his thumb firmly against the tiny worn notch on the side of the locket.
The gold cover clicked open, revealing a faded, water-damaged photograph of Claire smiling in a field of yellow Texas wildflowers.
Scratched inside the inner lid was a single sentence written in tiny, careful cursive letters.
Julian: For our brave little Leo. Forever your Claire.
Julian's eyes filled with hot tears as he gently brushed his thumb across the faded handwriting.
Julian: Claire's private handwriting... only she and I ever saw this inscription.
Leo: She told me to run into the trees when the bad man came with the crowbar.
Vanessa: Julian, please! This is an extortion plot! Call the police to haul him away to juvenile hall!
Julian: What is your full name, son?
Leo: Leo. Leo Sterling. Mom always called me her little bear.
A loud gasp rose from the front row where Claire's elderly aunt sat clutching her handkerchief in shock.
Julian: Only Claire called him that. She never said that name in public, not even once.
Vanessa: Anyone could guess a dumb baby nickname! Julian, stand up and finish our vows right now!
Leo: She knows my name, Dad. She came to the cellar two weeks ago.
Julian slowly looked up from the boy, his jaw hardening into solid stone as his eyes locked onto the bride.
Julian: What cellar, Leo?
Leo: The dark room under the barn near Waco. She had that big diamond on her thumb and smelled like sweet lavender.
Vanessa: I have never set foot in a barn in my life! You dirty little liar!
Leo: You gave Mr. Henderson a thick yellow envelope and told him to make sure I disappeared forever!
Julian: Thomas Henderson? The private investigator I paid three million dollars to search for my family?
Leo: Yes! He kept me locked up and told me you threw me away because I was bad!
Julian rose slowly to his feet, towering over the blonde woman in her ornate bridal gown.
Vanessa: Julian, don't look at me like that! You know how unstable private investigators can be!
Julian: Turn your head, Leo. Let me see.
Julian gently pushed back the boy's dusty hair, exposing a tiny red mark shaped like a leaf right behind his left ear.
Julian: My mother had this exact birthmark. My boy was born with it.
Vanessa: It's a coincidence! A sick, twisted coincidence!
Julian: You stole my child!
Julian's hand flew out with sudden, furious force, catching Vanessa across the cheek with a sharp, cracking slap.
The blow sent the bride crashing hard onto the white marble floor, her tiara snapping in two as she hit the stone.
Vanessa scrambled backward on her elbows in pure terror, raising both hands defensively with wide, terrified eyes.
Vanessa: Wait, please! Let me explain!
Julian: There is nothing to explain!
Julian lunged forward, grabbed her bare arm with an iron grip, and dragged her across the marble floor toward the exit doors.
Julian: You are going straight to federal prison!
