Four days later, the afternoon breeze blew gently through the live oak trees on the Sterling estate in Highland Park.
Leo was sitting on the wide back patio, wearing brand-new clothes and sneakers, happily eating a stack of pancakes with fresh strawberries.
Julian walked outside carrying a pitcher of orange juice, a soft smile on his face as he watched his son eat.
Julian: How are the pancakes, buddy?
Leo: They're the best thing I've ever eaten, Dad. Mrs. Gable made them extra fluffy!
Julian: Mrs. Gable said she's going to make you whatever you want every single morning for the next ten years.
Leo smiled, the dark circles under his eyes already fading under the warm Texas sun.
Marcus stepped out onto the stone patio, holding a leather folder under his arm.
Marcus: Afternoon, gentlemen.
Leo: Hi, Uncle Marcus! Look at my new watch, Dad got it for me yesterday!
Marcus: That looks like a real pilot's watch, Leo. Very sharp.
Marcus pulled up a chair and nodded toward Julian, lowering his voice slightly.
Julian: What did the district attorney say this morning?
Marcus: The grand jury indicted Vanessa Vance on capital murder, aggravated kidnapping, and criminal conspiracy. The state is officially seeking the death penalty.
Julian: And Richard?
Marcus: Richard was denied bail. They traced over two million dollars of corporate funds used to bribe local officials and cover up Henderson's tracks. Vance Logistics is entering bankruptcy liquidation by the end of the week.
Julian: Good. Let their entire corrupt dynasty collapse.
Marcus: Also, the probate judge officially reinstated Leo's full legal rights as sole heir to the Sterling estate and family trust fund.
Julian looked over at Leo, who was happily tossing a pancake crumb to a sparrow on the patio railing.
Julian: The money never mattered, Marcus. I just wanted my boy back.
Marcus: You got him back, Julian. And Claire got the justice she deserved.
Leo wiped his mouth with a napkin, reaching into his shirt pocket and pulling out the golden locket.
The worn metal had been fully restored by a Dallas master jeweler, polished until the falcon crest shone brilliantly in the daylight.
Leo: Look, Dad. The jeweler fixed the hinge so it closes with a loud snap now.
Julian reached out, gently clasping his fingers over his son’s small hand.
Julian: It looks just like the day I gave it to your mother on our anniversary.
Leo: Can we go visit Mom's garden today? I want to tell her that I found you, just like she said I would.
Julian felt a tear slip down his cheek, but this time, it was filled with peace.
Julian: Yes, Leo. We'll go together right now, and we'll bring her the prettiest yellow roses in all of Texas.
Leo wrapped his arms tightly around Julian's neck, holding on with all the strength in his small body.
Leo: I love you, Dad. I'm never letting go of you again.
Julian: I love you too, son. You're home now, and nothing in this world will ever tear us apart.
