The morning sun poured through the tall stained glass windows of the Dallas chapel.
Mark stood near the polished wooden altar and adjusted the silk bow tie around his collar.
He looked out at the rows of family members and close friends sitting softly in the pews.
His heart beat with excitement because he believed he was starting a brand new life.
His former wife had passed away after a long illness two years before this special day.
Since that sad time, Mark had focused all his energy on raising his young daughter, Lily.
Then he met Victoria, a wealthy woman who promised to bring happiness back into their quiet home.
Victoria worked at a powerful investment firm downtown and always wore fine designer clothes.
She seemed kind at first, though she often pushed Lily away during family dinners.
Mark assumed Victoria was simply unused to being a mother figure to a young child.
He believed that time would help them bond into a strong and loving family unit.
Suddenly, the double doors at the back of the sanctuary burst open with a loud thud.
Gasps echoed off the high ceiling as people turned around to see what was happening.
Seven-year-old Lily stood in the doorway, her chest heaving as she caught her breath.
She clutched a thick brown paper envelope tightly against her small white dress.
Tears rolled down her cheeks, leaving faint marks on her pale, freckled skin.
She did not care about the formal crowd staring directly at her unexpected entrance.
She ran down the light marble aisle toward her father as fast as her legs could go.
Lily: Dad, stop the wedding right now!
Mark took a fast step forward, his mind filled with total shock and deep worry.
Mark: Lily, sweetie, what are you doing here?
Victoria moved quickly, her long white wedding gown trailing behind her on the red carpet.
Her smooth forehead creased with deep anger as she stepped between Mark and his daughter.
Victoria: Get out of my wedding, you little brat!
Victoria grabbed Lily's upper arm tightly and shoved the young girl back toward the pews.
Lily stumbled back onto the cold floor, dropping the brown envelope right beside her knees.
The papers spilled out across the polished marble, revealing financial receipts and a photograph.
Mark gasped loudly and rushed down the short stairs to shield his sobbing young daughter.
Mark: Do not ever put your hands on my child again!
Lily: Look at the papers, Dad, please just read them!
Lily lifted a copy of a bank check and a photo of her late mother with shaking fingers.
Lily: She paid mom to disappear before she went into the hospital!
