Behind the Broken Drywall of the Luxury Mansion

The air inside the massive mansion smelled like lavender, polished marble, and an unsettling, heavy silence. Mark stood in the grand hallway, adjusting his silk tie as the glowing chandeliers reflected off the freshly waxed floors. His wife, Eleanor, adjusted her sapphire blue dress, her face cool and calm. To anyone standing outside, they were the picture of wealth, success, and American achievement.

Mark: Eleanor, did you double-check the lock on the east wing before the guests arrived?

Eleanor: Of course I did. Everything is under control, Mark. Stop fidgeting with your collar.

Mark: I just have a strange feeling tonight. Something feels off.

Eleanor: You always get nervous before a charity gala. Just focus on the donors and leave the rest to me.

A quiet thump resonated from deep within the hallway wall. It was soft, almost imperceptible, but Mark froze instantly. He turned toward the framed American flag hanging on the stark white drywall near the archway.

Mark: Did you hear that?

Eleanor: Hear what? It is just the central air unit kicking on. Do not make a scene in front of the caterers.

Mark: No, that was not the air conditioning. That sounded like someone knocking.

Mark stepped closer to the wall, ignoring Eleanor's sudden, sharp intake of breath. He placed his ear against the cold plaster. Another soft scrape echoed from the inside, followed by the muffled sound of small, shaky breaths. Mark’s eyes widened in horror as he noticed a hair-line fracture in the drywall beneath the heavy picture frame.

Mark: There is something behind this wall.

Eleanor: Mark, step away from there right now! We have fifty people arriving in twenty minutes!

Ignoring her command, Mark drove his fist into the weak plaster, tearing away a chunk of the drywall. Plaster dust exploded into the air, coating his dark tuxedo. As the dust settled, he stared into the dark, hollow cavity between the studs. Sitting in the cramped dust was a small, fair-skinned seven-year-old boy, trembling wildly, holding a glowing cell phone in his dusty hands.

Boy: Dad!

Mark: What... who are you? How did you get in there?

Boy: Dad! Help me! Please get me out!

Mark reached his hands into the jagged hole, but when he turned to look at Eleanor for answers, her face was completely blank. She was not shocked. She was not scared. She was simply calculating her next move.
