Shadows in the House

Behind the Wall

Mark: You've been lying to me since the day I met you. Everything—our finances, your family's estate, even the insurance claim—it was all a setup!

Clara: Mark, it wasn't a setup against you! I was trying to protect us from my uncle!

Mark: Protect us? By letting me work eighty hours a week at the firm while you kept thousands hid away in secret bank accounts?

Clara: Richard controlled my father's estate! When my dad died, Richard took over everything. He told me if I didn't play along, he would tie up the remaining money in probate court forever!

Mark: So you committed insurance fraud to get cash behind his back?

Clara: I was desperate! I needed money for Lily's medical treatments when she was born, and Richard refused to release a single dime from the trust fund!

Mark: And what about this house? Why did Richard put us here?

Clara: Because Richard knew my father hid the master keys and the original offshore ledger in this wall before he died! He couldn't come in and search the house himself without raising suspicion from the mortgage company!

Before Mark could answer, the front door downstairs slammed heavy against its frame. Deep, hurried footsteps echoed up the wooden staircase.

Voice from Stairs: Clara! Are you in here?

Mark turned toward the bedroom door as a tall man in a navy tailored suit stepped into the doorway. It was Richard Miller, Clara's uncle, breathing heavily with a set of brass keys clenched tightly in his hand.

Richard: What the hell are you doing to this wall, Mark?

Mark: Well, look who finally decided to show up. The generous family lawyer.

Richard: Put those documents down right now. You have no idea what you're messing with.

Clara: Uncle Richard, why did you send us to this house? You told me the bank owned it!

Richard: Shut up, Clara! You were supposed to just live here quietly while I cleared the title work!

Mark: He didn't care about you living here, Clara. He needed someone he could trust to hold the property while he hunted for whatever is inside that steel safe!

Richard: Give me the briefcase, Mark. Walk away from this, and I'll make sure you get a million-dollar payout from the estate settlement.

Mark: You think you can buy me off after framing my wife and dragging my daughter into your illegal money laundering scheme?

Richard: It's not a scheme! That money belongs to the Miller family enterprise!

Mark: The insurance fraud document has your signature as the certifying attorney, Richard. If I hand this to the District Attorney, you're going to federal prison for embezzlement and bank fraud.

Richard: You're not handing anything to anyone.

Richard reached into his suit jacket, pulling out a small black hand revolver and pointing it straight at Mark's chest.
