Within minutes, armed police officers flooded the second floor, securing the scene and taking Richard Miller into custody. He was led away in handcuffs, shouting threats toward Mark and Clara as he was pushed into the back of a patrol car.
Two federal agents from the financial crimes division arrived an hour later, carefully documenting the contents of the hidden passage behind the wardrobe. The steel safe was drilled open, revealing ledger books detailing decades of tax evasion, hidden offshore bank accounts, and corporate fraud orchestrated by Richard Miller.
Mark sat on the front porch steps, a thick blanket wrapped around his shoulders as he watched the investigators haul out evidence boxes. Clara walked out from the front door, holding two mugs of hot coffee. She sat down beside him on the cold concrete step.
Clara: Lily is finally asleep in the back seat of the officer's car. She was so brave tonight.
Mark: She's a tough kid. She knew something wasn't right the moment we walked into that room.
Clara: Mark... I need to say I'm sorry. I know you're angry at me.
Mark: I am angry, Clara. You hid the insurance money from me. You kept secrets about your family's financial situation while I worked myself to exhaustion.
Clara: I was terrified of Richard. When my father died, Richard told me that if I ever spoke about the money or challenged his authority over the estate, he would ruin us. He threatened to sue you, to make sure you lost your job.
Mark: You should have trusted me. We're partners, Clara. You don't face threats like that alone.
Clara: I know that now. I was so wrapped up in trying to survive my uncle's control that I didn't see how much damage I was doing to our marriage.
Mark: What did the federal agents say about the trust fund?
Clara: The original trust set up by my father is completely legitimate. Because Richard was embezzling from it illegally, the court is freezing his assets and restoring the full estate to me and Lily.
Mark: So the six million dollars... it's actually yours?
Clara: It's ours. But I don't want a single penny of it if it means losing you.
Mark looked down at his coffee mug, watching the steam rise into the cold night air. He took a slow breath, turning his head to meet his wife's tear-filled eyes.
Mark: We have a lot of work to do, Clara. We need full honesty. No more hidden accounts, no more kept secrets.
Clara: I promise. On everything I hold dear, no more secrets.
