Mark sat at his desk, wiping sweat from his forehead as he stared at the financial report for his small suburban home. His mortgage payment was due, and his phone rang with an alert from the remote camera system he had set up in his eight-year-old son's elementary classroom.
Mark: What is going on in that room?
He tapped the screen, opening the live video feed. The stream buffered for a second before displaying the bright classroom.
Teacher: Keep your hands on the desk, Leo!
Mark watched in shock as the teacher raised a heavy wooden ruler and brought it down hard on his son’s tiny hands.
Leo: Ow! Stop, please! It hurts!
Teacher: You will learn discipline in my room whether you like it or not!
Mark's heart pounded against his ribs. His blood ran cold as he saw his son, Leo, sobbing uncontrollably, clutching his bruised, red knuckles.
Mark: What is she doing to my boy?!
The teacher struck the boy’s hands again, the sharp wooden snap echoing through the tiny speaker of Mark's smartphone.
Teacher: Quiet down! Not another word!
Mark: No way. Not on my watch.
Mark grabbed his truck keys, slammed his office door shut, and sprinted out to his car, his mind racing with anger and panic.
