Within ten minutes, two police officers arrived alongside Principal Harrison. The principal immediately steered everyone out of the classroom and into his carpeted office.
Principal Harrison: Mr. Miller, please, let's calm down and talk about this like adults before things get out of hand.
Mark: Calm down? Look at my son's hands! They're swollen and red!
Officer Davis: Mr. Miller, let us see what happened. Do you have proof of physical abuse?
Mark: Yes, officer. Look at this screen right here.
Mark handed his smartphone to Officer Davis, playing the saved clip from the classroom feed. The officer's eyes narrowed as the video clearly showed Mrs. Gable striking Leo's hands with a thick ruler.
Officer Davis: Mrs. Gable, is this you in this video?
Mrs. Gable: That... that video is taken out of context! The boy was refusing to do his work and was throwing a tantrum!
Officer Miller: Ma'am, corporal punishment is strictly illegal in public schools in this state. You struck a child repeatedly.
Principal Harrison: Now wait a second, officers. Mrs. Gable has been a dedicated teacher here for over twenty years. Her record is spotless!
Mark: I don't care if she's been here for fifty years! She hurt my kid!
Principal Harrison: If we escalate this, it could cause serious financial and legal liability for the school district, Mr. Miller. Maybe we can handle this internally with a suspension?
Mark: Internal suspension? Are you out of your mind?
Leo: Daddy, she hit Jimmy last week too... and Sarah...
Mark: What did you just say, Leo?
Leo: She hits anyone who gets the answers wrong. She told us not to tell our parents or we'd get in bigger trouble.
Officer Davis: Mrs. Gable, turn around and place your hands behind your back.
Mrs. Gable: You can't arrest me! I'm a respected educator! Do you know who my husband is? He's on the school board!
Officer Davis: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
