The Legal Avalanche Begins

Chained on the Lawn by Her Own Grandmother

The next morning, the sun rose bright over the quiet courthouse in downtown Dallas. Mark stood in the hallway wearing his custom tailored suit, flanked by his mother Evelyn and his high-priced corporate defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton. Mark had a smirk on his face, fully expecting Sarah to walk in crying and begging for a settlement.

Mark: Look at her walking in here with her cheap little sister. She really thinks a local public defender is going to save her.

Evelyn: Make sure she signs over total custody, Mark. I won't have my granddaughter raised by a girl who publicly embarrasses our family lineage.

Arthur: Don't worry, Mrs. Miller. This will be over in twenty minutes. The judge is a personal friend of your family's estate trustees.

The heavy double doors opened, but Sarah didn't walk in with a public defender. She walked in alongside a tall, silver-haired man in an immaculate dark suit, followed by two paralegals carrying heavy leather briefcases. Mark's attorney froze, his confident smile instantly vanishing.

Arthur: What... what is Julian Vance doing here?

Mark: Who is that? Just some local attorney?

Arthur: Local?! That's Julian Vance, the most ruthless high-asset litigation attorney in the state! He doesn't take cases under ten million dollars!

Sarah: Good morning, Mark. Evelyn.

Evelyn: How dare you bring high-priced mercenaries into our family matters! You can't afford him!

Julian Vance: Mrs. Miller, I advise you to keep your mouth closed. Every word you speak from this moment forward is being recorded for the criminal record.

Mark: Criminal record?! What the hell are you talking about?! This is a custody hearing!

Julian Vance: Not anymore, Mr. Miller. Five minutes ago, Child Protective Services and the County Sheriff's Department were served with formal felony child endangerment charges against your mother, signed by a state judge.

Evelyn: WHAT?! You impudent snake!

Mark: You can't do that! My mother was supervising my daughter!

Julian Vance: Supervising? We have forensic photographic evidence of the lacerations and deep tissue bruising on three-year-old Lily's chest, caused by a heavy industrial zinc chain. We also have the chain itself, tested for DNA.

Arthur: Mr. Vance, surely we can handle this privately outside of court...

Julian Vance: Oh, we aren't done, Mr. Pendelton. My client has also submitted full documentation of Mr. Miller's commercial asset holdings, including undisclosed offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, to the Internal Revenue Service and federal prosecutors.

Mark's face drained of all color. He staggered back a step, looking at Sarah as if seeing a total stranger for the first time in his life.
