The polished white marble of St. Jude's cathedral gleamed under the midday sun. Soft organ music drifted through the high arches, filling the cavernous room with solemn grace.
Julian Vance stood at the altar, smoothing the lapels of his designer black tuxedo.
Beside him, Victoria Sterling adjusted the antique lace veil cascading over her shoulders. Her smile was sharp, calculated, and triumphant.
Then, the golden double doors at the far end of the sanctuary burst open with a heavy bang.
A small six-year-old boy in an oversized beige suit tripped on the threshold, tumbling down onto his hands and knees against the cold stone floor.
Bridesmaid Clara: Leo! Sweetie, stop!
Bridesmaid Megan: Get up, honey, you need to bring the rings!
The two women rushed forward, their shimmering rose-gold gowns rustling as they leaned down to grab his shoulders.
Leo jerked violently away from their manicured hands, sobbing so hard his small chest hitched.
Leo: No! Let go of me! Let go!
Julian: Leo, what are you doing? Stand up right now and bring the pillow!
Victoria: Julian, control your son. He's ruining the entire procession in front of our guests.
Tears poured down the boy's red cheeks as he scrambled up, his gaze locked past the altar toward the side hallway where the banquet staff was prepping.
Leo: MOMMY!
A stunned murmur rippled through the hundreds of wealthy guests filling the pews.
Julian: Leo, stop talking nonsense! Your mother is gone!
Leo: MOMMY, PLEASE!
The boy bolted down the center aisle, his small leather shoes slapping wildly against the marble as he broke into a frantic sprint.
In the archway of the side corridor, a catering maid froze. She held a heavy silver serving tray in her trembling hands, her simple black uniform spotless.
The boy crashed straight into her legs, burying his wet face into her starched white apron.
The heavy tray clattered onto the carpeted runner, and the woman dropped instantly to her knees, wrapping her arms around the child with desperate strength.
Helena: I'm right here, Leo! I've got you! I'm right here!
Julian took two staggering steps down the altar steps, his breath catching in his throat as the sunlight hit her left hand.
On the maid's ring finger rested a massive, flawless cushion-cut diamond ring—the Vance family heirloom that had vanished three years ago with a dead woman.
