Victoria: Julian, what is the meaning of this? Why is that hired girl holding your son?
Julian didn't answer. He stared down the endless red runner, his eyes wide and completely bloodshot.
Julian: Helena?!
The word was barely a whisper, but in the echoing cathedral, it sounded like an explosion.
Guests craned their necks, muttering among themselves as the maid held the sobbing boy tighter against her chest.
Victoria: Are you out of your mind? Helena died in a car wreck in Maine three years ago! You identified the dental records yourself!
Julian: That's her ring. Look at her hand, Victoria. Look at the stone!
Victoria hitched her heavy lace gown and stormed down the steps toward the back of the church.
Victoria: Security! Remove this catering worker immediately! She's trespassing and confusing a child!
Two burly security guards in dark suits moved quickly down the side aisles, but Helena stood up slowly, keeping Leo pressed firmly behind her back.
Helena: Don't you dare touch him.
Her voice was quiet, raspy, but commanding enough to freeze the guards in their tracks.
Julian: Helena... how? How are you standing here?
Helena: You look like you've seen a ghost, Julian. Or maybe just an expensive mistake.
Victoria: You disgusting fraud! You stole that ring from Julian's safe before you faked whatever sick stunt you pulled!
Leo: It's Mommy! Daddy, it's Mommy! She smells like my lavender soap!
Julian: Leo, step away from her until we figure this out.
Helena: He's not moving an inch, Julian. He's my son. He has been my son since the day I carried him, and no legal document you forged changes that.
Julian wiped cold sweat from his forehead, his polished composure shattering completely.
Julian: I didn't forge anything! The hospital called me! The car went off the bridge into the river, Helena! The car was charred!
Helena: The car was empty when it hit the water. But you made sure the dental charts from your private clinic matched the ashes, didn't you?
Gasps broke out across the front pews where Julian's business partners and wealthy board members sat.
Victoria: Shut her up! Julian, tell security to drag her out before she slanders our families in public!
Helena: Why are you so terrified of the truth, Victoria? Is it because the prenup you signed last week only pays out if Julian is legally a widower?
Victoria's face drained of color beneath her heavy bridal makeup.
Victoria: You don't know what you're talking about, you insane street tramp!
Helena: I know every word of it. Because before you paid off that clinic director in Portland, you forgot one very simple thing.
Helena reached into the pocket of her black maid's apron and pulled out a folded slip of heavy cream cardstock.
Helena: You forgot that the Vance family trust fund was never left to Julian. It was left to me and my son.
Julian stumbled forward, shaking his head in frantic denial.
Julian: That's impossible. My father wrote a new will before he passed!
Helena: Did he? Or did your corporate lawyer just tell you that so you could access the emergency credit lines?
Leo clung to Helena's apron, his small hands bunching the fabric tight.
Leo: Don't leave again, Mommy. Please don't let them take me to that boarding school.
Helena leaned down, brushing her lips against Leo's forehead while her fierce, steady gaze never left Julian's pale face.
Helena: Nobody is taking you anywhere, sweetheart. Mommy is home to collect what's ours.
