The Will That Changes Everything

Declared Dead for Her Fortune, She Crashed Her Stepmother's Wedding

Richard tore off his black silk boutonniere, threw it onto the runner, and marched down the center aisle without looking back once.

Juliet lunged forward as if to chase him, but Officer Miller blocked her path with his outstretched arm.

Officer Miller: Stay right there, ma'am. We are not finished here.

Juliet: You cannot touch me! I have high-priced lawyers on retainer at three multinational corporate firms!

Caroline: You had lawyers, Juliet. But their retainer checks bounced forty-eight hours ago when the Department of Justice froze your accounts.

Arthur flipped the first page of the legal docket, revealing a crisp document stamped with an embossed gold foil seal.

Attorney Hayes: In addition to the criminal fraud and kidnapping charges, we are executing the true and final last will and testament of Charles Edward Mercer.

Juliet: The will in my safe was drafted by the finest estate planner in Manhattan! It supersedes any outdated scribble you have there!

Caroline: The will in your safe was a forgery, Juliet. You hired a document copier from Queens to forge my father's signature on a phony codicil.

Caroline reached down into Arthur’s briefcase and pulled out an eight-by-ten glossy photograph.

Caroline: Do you recognize this man, Juliet? His name is Leonard Torres. The FBI picked him up at JFK Airport trying to board a flight to Bogota.

Juliet grabbed the altar table with both hands, her diamond rings scratching against the smooth oak wood.

Juliet: Leonard was a contractor... he did graphic design for the Mercer foundation marketing brochures.

Attorney Hayes: Leonard gave a sworn videotaped deposition admitting you paid him seventy-five thousand dollars in cash to sign Charles Mercer’s name to the amended trust.

Marcus Mercer shook his head, tears welling in his aged eyes as he stared at the woman his late brother had loved.

Marcus: Charles gave you a life most women only dream of having, Juliet. Mansions, European holidays, unlimited credit lines. Why wasn't that enough for you?

Juliet: Because it was never mine! It was always Caroline's! Every time Charles spoke, it was Caroline this, Caroline that!

Juliet screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, screeching wail that shattered the church's sacred silence.

Juliet: I was tired of being second best to a dead woman's brat! I wanted the whole company! I earned it by putting up with that boring old fool for ten years!

The entire chapel gasped in collective outrage. Two older board members from Mercer Logistics stood up and walked toward the exit in disgust.

Caroline: Thank you for saying that out loud, Juliet. Every word was recorded on Officer Miller’s body camera.

Juliet froze, her wide eyes darting down to the glowing red recording light mounted on the officer’s chest harness.

Juliet: You... you tricked me into confessing!

Caroline: You confessed because your greed made you sloppy and arrogant. You thought you could erase my existence with a few bribes and a fake death certificate.

Caroline extended her hand, pointing firmly at Juliet's left wrist.

Caroline: The bracelet too, Juliet. The diamond tennis bracelet my father bought in Paris for my eighteenth birthday.

Juliet’s trembling fingers fumbled at the clasp, her manicured nails breaking against the gold safety catch.
