The Park Meeting

He Held Her Picture Every Night Until She Appeared

The bright sun glinted through the leaves of the massive oak trees surrounding the paved walkway. Ethan stood near the edge of the lawn holding the bouquet of red roses tightly in his hands. He took a deep, nervous breath, feeling the cool autumn breeze blow gently across his face. In the distance, a figure in a tailored coat was walking slowly along the stone path toward the pond. His heart leaped into his throat as he recognized the graceful posture and radiant blonde hair immediately.

Ethan: Clara...

He took three steps forward, adjusting his light blue button-down shirt with a trembling hand. Clara stopped near the flower garden, looking at a wooden bench dedicated to her late mother. She turned around slowly, sensing someone approaching, and her blue eyes locked directly onto his face. The bouquet of red roses felt light in his grip as he closed the distance between them.

Ethan: I love you with all my heart. Will you give me a chance?

Clara gasped loudly, her hand instantly flying up to cover her mouth in absolute shock. Her blue eyes filled with tears as she looked from his face down to the beautiful red roses. She held the flowers near her face, breathing in their sweet scent as a soft, radiant smile formed. For a brief second, the painful years of separation seemed to melt away in the bright sunlight.

Clara: Ethan? Is it really you standing here?

Ethan: I never stopped loving you, Clara. Not for a single day.

Clara: My father told me you took a buyout check and moved to California three years ago!

Ethan: What? That is a complete lie! He showed me an empty house and threatened my business!

Clara stepped closer, her soft fingers reaching out to touch his cheek to ensure he was real. Her eyes searched his face, taking in his familiar freckles and the tears welling in his eyes. The realization of her father's elaborate deception hit her like a physical blow to the chest. She clutched the rose stems tighter, her body trembling with a mixture of grief and sudden relief.

Clara: He intercepted every single letter I tried to send from Chicago.

Ethan: Marcus gave me the letter you wrote the night before you were forced to leave.

Clara: You read it? You know I never wanted to abandon you?

Ethan: I know everything now. I know how much he manipulated both of us to keep us apart.

She placed her free hand softly over his fingers, feeling the warmth of his pulse beneath his skin. The sunlit park seemed completely silent around them, save for the gentle rustling of oak leaves above. Ethan smiled, a genuine, joyful expression that had not touched his face in over three dark years. He extended his hand, and she took it without a single second of hesitation.

Clara: I felt so alone for so long, Ethan.

Ethan: You are not alone anymore. I am right here, and I am not going anywhere.

They began walking slowly together along the paved walkway, holding hands tightly under the tree canopy. The warmth of her hand in his restored a sense of peace he thought was lost forever. They talked warmly, catching up on the years stole from them by pride and greed. But as they approached the park exit, a sleek black luxury sedan pulled up sharply to the curb.

Julian: Clara! What on earth are you doing holding hands with this nobody?

A tall man in an expensive tailored suit stepped out of the back seat with a furious glare. Julian Vance, her ambitious cousin who now controlled the family firm, marched toward them aggressively. The momentary peace of the park vanished instantly as tension exploded into the crisp afternoon air.

Julian: Get away from her, Miller, before I have you arrested for harassment!
