The late afternoon sun broke through the storm clouds over the Dallas skyline, casting long golden beams across the lawn as the final police car rolled down the private drive.
Adrian: Can you walk, Clara, or do you want me to carry you to the car?
Clara: I can walk. With you and Leo holding my hands, I can walk anywhere.
Adrian: Let's get out of this place. The lawyers can handle the estate liquidation tomorrow morning.
Clara: What about your company? Victoria said the merger will collapse without her father's bank.
Adrian: Let it collapse. I have my own patents. I have my own team that walked out the day Marcus took over the board. We start over from scratch.
Leo: Daddy, are we going to get ice cream?
Adrian: We're getting three scoops of chocolate chip mint, buddy. Whatever you want.
The guests inside the dining hall had already begun slipping out the side doors in quiet disgrace, embarrassed to have been part of Victoria's grand showcase.
Clara: I still feel like I'm dreaming, Adrian. I kept having this dream in that cold white room, thinking I would wake up and be alone again.
Adrian: Feel my hand, Clara. Squeeze it as hard as you can.
She squeezed his fingers, her worn, calloused palm warm against his skin.
Clara: You're real. We're really here.
Adrian: We are real, and this time, nobody will ever tear us apart again.
He opened the passenger door of his black pickup truck, lifting Leo into the center seat before gently helping Clara inside.
Clara: Thank you for stopping that wedding, Adrian. If you had said 'I do,' they would have shipped me to another county tomorrow.
Adrian: I knew something was wrong the second you walked into that dining room carrying that tray. You have the same scent of vanilla and rain you always had.
Clara: Even after three years in the dark?
Adrian: Even if a hundred years passed, I would know my wife in any room on earth.
Adrian climbed into the driver's seat, locked the doors, and started the engine. As they pulled out of the iron gates and onto the open highway, Clara leaned her head against his shoulder, holding Leo tight against her side.
Behind them, the cold stone mansion stood silent and empty, stripped of its lies, while ahead of them lay the vast Texas horizon and the simple life they had stolen back from the dark.
