The crystal chandeliers inside the Dallas estate shook under the force of the strike. Fine bone china shattered against the imported Italian marble, sending gravy splattering across white satin.
Victoria: Keep your filthy hands away from my fiancé!
The woman on the floor curled into a ball, clutching her bleeding lip. Her gray staff apron was torn at the collar.
Clara: Please... ma'am, I was only pouring the sparkling cider...
Victoria: Stay on the ground where you belong!
Victoria shoved the girl hard, sending her sliding into the polished leg of the twelve-seat mahogany table. Fifty wealthy guests in designer tuxedos and gowns froze mid-sip.
Adrian: Don't you ever lay another hand on her!
The groom broke away from the floral arch. He tore off his silk boutonniere, his dress shoes skidding as he dropped straight to his knees beside the broken server.
Victoria: Adrian, get away from that dirty girl right now! Look at your suit!
Adrian: Clara? Clara, look at me right now.
The maid flinched, pulling her collar up to hide her neck, but her trembling fingers could not stop him.
Clara: Sir, please don't get me fired. I need this shift. My baby needs medicine.
Adrian's hands gripped her wrists, pulling them down to expose the birthmark on her collarbone and the silver band dangling from a worn thread around her neck.
Adrian: You don't recognize me? Look into my eyes, Clara. It's me.
Victoria: She's a temp from the downtown agency, Adrian! Stop making a scene in front of the board members!
Adrian: Everyone shut your mouths!
Adrian pulled the sobbing maid into his arms, lifting her off the cold stone before turning to his family with tears streaming down his face.
Adrian: She is my real wife who vanished three years ago!
A collective gasp ripped through the dining hall. The silence that followed was heavy enough to suffocate everyone in the room.
