Evelyn: Eleanor! What... what are you doing here today? You weren't supposed to visit until Friday!
Eleanor: I decided to drop by to see my granddaughter. And it looks like I arrived just in time.
Evelyn: It's nothing, really. Maria was just being careless with the laundry equipment and almost hurt the baby.
Maria: That is a complete lie, Mrs. Vance! She held the iron right against Lily's face!
Evelyn: Shut up, Maria! You're fired!
Eleanor: Quiet, Evelyn! Let me hear what Maria has to say!
Eleanor walked briskly across the foyer, her heavy heels echoing with every commanding step. She looked past Evelyn and stared straight into the eyes of the trembling maid holding her precious granddaughter.
Eleanor: Maria, speak clearly. What happened right before I opened that door?
Maria: I heard Lily screaming from the hallway. When I ran in, Evelyn was holding the hot steam iron just inches from her face, threatening her because she wouldn't stop crying!
Evelyn: She's lying to protect herself! She was the one holding it!
Maria: Look at the table! The iron is still plugged in right next to where Lily was sitting!
Eleanor glanced down at the side table, seeing the bright red light on the iron and the faint wisps of heat rising off the surface. Her face turned pale with pure rage.
Eleanor: You brought a burning iron near a two-year-old child?
Evelyn: She was misbehaving! She needs to learn respect for her elders!
Eleanor: She is a baby, you psychotic woman!
Evelyn: Don't talk to me like that! I am Arthur's wife! I run this household now!
Evelyn took an aggressive step toward Eleanor, raising her voice in a desperate attempt to regain control of the room. But Eleanor didn't flinch for a single second.
Before Evelyn could say another word, Eleanor swung her hand with all the force of a protective grandmother, bringing her palm down squarely against Evelyn's cheek.
A loud, sharp slap echoed through the grand foyer, instantly cutting off Evelyn's words and sending her stumbling back against the sofa edge.
