Elena: You stood there drinking scotch while your daughter cried on a dirty floor!
Carter: I didn't know, Elena! I thought she was safe!
Elena: You never care! You only care about this fake luxury life, your high-paying executive job, and your precious new wife's family money!
Evelyn: Get this trashy woman out of my wedding venue right now! Security!
Before security could step forward, I transferred Mia slightly to my left arm, stepped right up to Carter, and pulled my right hand back. The smack echoed like a gunshot across the high ceilings of the ballroom. Carter’s head snapped to the side, his scotch spilling all over his crisp white tuxedo shirt.
Elena: YOU BITCH!
Evelyn: Oh my God! You just hit the groom!
Carter: Elena... stop!
Elena: You spineless coward! You let this monster abuse your own flesh and blood so you wouldn't lose her daddy's inheritance!
Evelyn: Somebody call the police! She assaulted my husband!
Elena: Go ahead, call 911! Call the police and let them inspect the venue where you left a three-year-old child unattended under a table! Let's see who gets arrested today!
Mia wrapped her tiny arms tightly around my neck, her little heart racing against my chest. The entire room was dead silent. I could see Carter’s father, a prominent Dallas lawyer, sitting near the front with his head buried in his hands, completely mortified.
Carter: Elena, please... let's step outside into the foyer. The press is outside.
Elena: Let them see! Let the whole world see what kind of father you really are!
Evelyn: You're just jealous because Carter left you broke in that tiny apartment while I gave him a mansion!
Elena: I would rather live in a shed with my daughter's safety than live in a castle built on cruelty!
Carter: Elena, I'll pay for extra child support. Whatever you want, just don't ruin this deal with my father-in-law's firm.
Elena: Money? You think you can buy your way out of child neglect?
Carter: I am her biological father, Elena! You can't keep her away from me!
Elena: You just signed away every right you ever had in front of three hundred witnesses.
I turned my back on both of them, my heels clicking sharply against the polished wood floor as I strode toward the heavy oak exit doors. But as I reached the foyer, Carter came running out after us, grabbing my arm near the glass doors.
