The morning sun cut through the heavy linen curtains of the quiet suburban living room. Oak floors gleamed under a fresh coat of wax, reflecting the framed flag hanging neatly on the wall.
Thomas sat stiffly on the beige couch, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. His brow was furrowed with deep lines of frustration as he stared directly at his teenage son.
Thomas: You are turning eighteen next month, Jason. You need to focus on your future.
Jason: My future is my choice, Dad. You cannot force me into a life I do not want.
Jason stood by the window, his arms folded defiantly against his chest. His jaw was set firm, his eyes locked onto his father with absolute stubbornness.
Thomas: Go to school, son. Get your coat and get moving right now.
Jason: I'm not going.
Thomas: Excuse me? What did you just say to me?
Jason: I said I am not going to class today. I have other plans.
Thomas pushed himself up from the couch, his heavy boots thudding against the solid hardwood floor. He closed the gap between them in two long, threatening strides.
Thomas: You live under my roof, Jason. You will do what I tell you to do.
Jason: I am sick of you controlling every single second of my life!
Thomas grabbed the young man by his shoulders, his grip tight enough to wrinkle his shirt. He shoved him forcefully toward the hallway that led to the front entryway.
Thomas: You have no choice! Walk out that door and go to your classes!
Jason: Stop pushing me! You cannot dictate who I am allowed to love!
Thomas: That girl is a distraction! She is going to ruin every opportunity you have!
Jason yanked himself free from his father's grip, his face flushed red with anger and humiliation. He stumbled back against the white trim of the door frame.
Jason: Clara loves me for who I am. You only care about your own foolish pride!
Thomas: I care about your college degree and your career, you ungrateful child!
Jason: Then you care about the wrong things. I am leaving, and I am not coming back.
Jason spun around and yanked the heavy front door open, stepping out into the cool morning air. The door slammed shut behind him with a deafening rattle that shook the glass panes.
Thomas stood alone in the hallway, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath. He stared at the brass doorknob, convinced his son would return before nightfall.
Down the street, Clara was waiting near the edge of the stone chapel courtyard. Sunlight bounced off the stain glass windows as she watched Jason jog toward her.
Clara: Did he listen to you at all? Did he understand?
Jason: No. He never listens to anything I say. He only knows how to command.
Clara took his trembling hand into hers, lacing her fingers securely between his. She offered him a small, reassuring smile that instantly eased the tension in his shoulders.
Clara: So what are we going to do now? We cannot stay in this town.
Jason: Forget everything else. Let's get married today.
Clara: Are you completely sure about this, Jason? There is no turning back from this.
Jason: I have never been more sure of anything in my entire life. Let's go.
