My Nephew Handed Me A Flash Drive Right Before My Wedding

The polished white marble of the chapel hallway felt cold right through my dress shoes. Flowers were everywhere, thousands of dollars worth of white roses, and guests were already finding their seats inside.

I adjusted my silver cufflinks in the antique mirror, trying to breathe through the tight knot in my chest.

Toby: Uncle David! Uncle David, please wait!

I turned around and saw my seven-year-old nephew sprinting across the slick floor in his tiny black tuxedo. His bowtie was crooked, and his cheeks were wet with tears.

David: Toby? Hey, buddy, slow down. You're going to slip.

He grabbed my arm with both hands, his little fingers digging into the expensive fabric of my suit.

Toby: You can't go in there! You can't marry her!

I dropped down to one knee so I was looking straight into his eyes. His chin was trembling violently.

David: Toby, talk to me. What happened? Did someone hurt you?

Toby: She's bad, Uncle David. She thinks I don't understand, but I do. Don't marry her... look what she did!

He leaned in close, his hot breath shaking against my ear as he reached into his jacket pocket.

David: What do you have there?

He pressed a small, cold metal object directly into my open palm. It was a black USB flash drive, scratched along the plastic edge.

Toby: She dropped it under the guest bed when she was packing her white bags. She said if I told you about her phone calls, she'd make sure my mom went to jail.

The air rushed out of my lungs as footsteps echoed down the grand corridor.

Vanessa: What are you two whispering about?

Vanessa stood in the doorway in her lace bridal gown, her smile freezing the moment her eyes dropped to my open hand.

Vanessa: David... give that to me right now!

Her voice cracked with sheer panic, and looking into the eyes of the woman I was about to marry, I realized I had never truly known her at all.
