Unmasking At The Altar

My Nephew Handed Me A Flash Drive Right Before My Wedding

The heavy doors of the sanctuary opened, and the grand pipe organ began playing the traditional bridal march.

Two hundred guests rose from their pews, turning to look toward the back of the chapel.

Vanessa stood at the entrance on her father's arm, glowing in layers of white silk, carrying a massive bouquet of calla lilies.

She locked eyes with me at the altar, offering a rehearsed, angelic smile, though her eyes were darting nervously around the room.

She slowly walked down the aisle, stepping up to the raised marble platform until she was standing directly across from me.

Officiant: Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the presence of family and friends to unite this man and this woman in holy matrimony.

Vanessa whispered under her breath, barely moving her lips behind her bouquet.

Vanessa: You made the right choice, David. Let's just get through this and forget about the misunderstanding.

David: It wasn't a misunderstanding, Vanessa.

She blinked, her smile tightening at the corners.

Officiant: If anyone here knows of any lawful impediment why these two may not be joined together, let them speak now or forever hold their peace.

The chapel fell into complete, holy silence.

David: Actually, Pastor. I have an objection.

A collective gasp rippled across the pews. My mother sat up straight in the front row, clutching her pearls.

Vanessa: David! What are you doing? Stop this right now!

I reached into my pocket, pulling out the small wireless microphone usually reserved for the vows, and clipped it to my lapel.

David: I'd like everyone to look at the projector screens on either side of the altar, please.

Mark, sitting in the sound booth at the back, clicked a button. The photo slideshow of our courtship vanished from the monitors.

In its place appeared high-resolution scans of forged bank transfers, wire receipts, and a legal contract bearing Vanessa's signature alongside Richard Vance's name.

Vanessa's Father: What is the meaning of this? David, have you lost your mind?

David: Ask your daughter, Mr. Hayes. Ask her about the three million dollars she was planning to siphon from my sister's trust fund tomorrow morning.

Vanessa lunged forward, grabbing my sleeve with polished nails.

Vanessa: Turn that off! Turn it off right now! It's a fake, all of it is fake!

The audio recording began playing through the chapel's surround-sound speakers, filling the room with Vanessa's unmistakable laugh.

"He won't notice. David trusts me completely... By the time he realizes the mortgage on Clara's home was leveraged, the whole inheritance will be transferred..."

My sister Clara stood up from her seat, tears streaming down her face as she covered her mouth with both hands.

Clara: Vanessa... how could you? I trusted you with our father's estate!

Vanessa spun around, her face twisting into an ugly snarl as she looked out at the horrified crowd.

Vanessa: You're all pathetic fools! Every single one of you!

The church erupted into absolute chaos.
