Sarah stood in front of the tall iron gates of the Dallas mansion, clutching her leather purse tightly.
Her hands trembled slightly because she had missed her baby boy so desperately during the long trial.
The afternoon heat was heavy, but a sudden wave of cold dread washed over her entire body.
Her ex-husband Richard had married Victoria only six months after their messy and painful legal divorce.
Victoria was a wealthy socialite who always treated Sarah with cruel open contempt and cold dismissive smiles.
Sarah pressed the intercom button near the stone pillar and waited nervously for someone to answer her call.
Silence echoed across the speaker for nearly a full minute before Victoria finally answered with an annoyed sigh.
Victoria: Why are you ringing my gate so early, Sarah?
Sarah: The court order states my visitation starts at precisely two o'clock today.
Victoria: Well, plans change, and we are quite busy inside right now.
Sarah: You cannot break the judge's clear custody agreement, Victoria!
Victoria: Watch me do whatever I want on my family's private property.
The intercom speaker clicked off abruptly, leaving Sarah standing alone on the hot asphalt drive.
Her heart sank as she heard the distant sound of muffled toddler cries drifting through the trees.
She recognized little Leo's sharp voice immediately and knew instantly that something was terribly wrong inside.
Instead of waiting for the gates to open, Sarah quickly jogged toward the side perimeter garden fence.
She found a small maintenance latch that the groundskeeper had carelessly left unbolted that sunny afternoon.
Sarah slipped quietly past the tall rose bushes and hurried directly toward the mansion's rear patio doors.
The cries grew louder and more desperate as she approached the heavy glass sunroom near the pool.
Through the tinted glass, she saw little Leo frantically pounding his tiny palms against the thick door.
The heavy brass deadbolt on the exterior frame was turned firmly into its locked position from outside.
Sarah: Leo! Baby, Mommy is right here! Can you hear me?
The little toddler pressed his face against the glass, weeping loudly as he reached toward his mother.
Sarah frantically grabbed the heavy metal handle and yanked on it with all of her strength.
The solid oak and glass door refused to budge even an inch against her desperate pulling force.
She looked across the sunlit patio and spotted Victoria lounging comfortably on a white outdoor sofa.
Victoria held a crystal glass of red wine in her right hand and looked completely calm and unbothered.
She slowly turned her head toward Sarah, offering a tiny, cruel smile without moving from her seat.
Sarah: Unlock this door right now, Victoria! He is terrified in there!
Victoria: He needs to learn proper discipline, and you need to leave my property immediately.
Sarah: He is only one year old, you absolute monster!
Victoria: I am his stepmother now, so I decide how this household is run daily.
Sarah: You locked a helpless child in a hot room alone!
Victoria: No one will ever take the word of an unstable ex-wife over mine, Sarah.
Sarah pulled out her smartphone with shaking fingers and quickly dialed emergency dispatch services right away.
She backed away toward the front courtyard so Victoria would not try to destroy her mobile device.
Sarah: Dispatch, please send police units to the Sterling estate immediately; my child is in danger!
