The organ music echoed softly through the chapel as I adjusted my veil, looking at David. He looked so handsome in his black tuxedo, standing by the altar with a wide, reassuring smile. Everything about this day felt like a dream come true after three years together. But just as the pastor raised his hands to speak, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the chapel swung open with a loud bang.
Rain poured heavily outside, and a small, drenched girl in a muddy dress ran down the aisle, clutching a wet kraft paper envelope against her chest. She was trembling, her wet blonde hair clinging to her cheeks, and her blue eyes filled with absolute desperation as she looked up at the altar.
Little Girl: MOMMY! DON'T MARRY HIM!
The entire room went dead silent. Guests gasped, turning in their seats as the little girl stopped right at the foot of the altar steps. David’s face instantly darkened, his calm expression melting into sharp anger.
David: WHO ARE YOU? GET OUT OF HERE!
Little Girl: I AM MICHAEL'S DAUGHTER! YOUR REAL HUSBAND!
I felt the breath leave my lungs as I stared at her, then back at David. My head began to spin as five years of buried grief violently rushed back to the surface. Michael was my first husband, the love of my life, who had tragically vanished and was declared dead five years ago in Dallas. His body had never been found, leaving me heartbroken until David came into my life to rebuild the shattered pieces.
Clara: THAT'S A LIE! MICHAEL DIED 5 YEARS AGO IN DALLAS!
Little Girl: HE KEPT MY DAD LOCKED IN SECRET FOR 5 YEARS AND KILLED HIM YESTERDAY!
She pulled a damp bank check out of the envelope with shaking, rain-soaked fingers. My heart stopped as I saw David's face turn ghost white, his eyes wide with absolute terror. Something terrible was hidden inside that envelope, and the life I thought I knew was about to crumble into pieces.
