FABLE

Breaking The Chains

She Escaped Her Addict Husband and Found True Love

A month passed, and the legal battles reached a intense turning point inside a quiet county courtroom. The air was cold, smelling of old paper and floor wax. Sarah sat at the plaintiff's table beside Marcus and David, wearing a sharp navy blazer that made her look confident and strong. Mark sat across the aisle, dressed in a faded suit that hung loosely on his frail frame. His attorney looked sullen as the judge reviewed the financial audit records.

Judge: Mr. Miller, these financial records show extreme negligence and unauthorized transfers.

Mark: Your Honor, I was sick! I needed help!

Judge: You refused rehab three times this year according to medical reports.

Mark: She abandoned me when I needed her most!

Sarah: I gave you four years of my life to help you get clean!

Sarah’s voice rang out clear and resonant through the high-ceilinged room. She did not yell or cry this time. Her tone was steady, carrying the heavy weight of truth that no argument could shatter. Mark looked toward the judge, opening his mouth to speak, but the judge raised a stern hand to stop him immediately. The courtroom was dead silent as everyone waited for the final ruling.

Judge: The court grants the emergency divorce decree and full ownership of the remaining estate to Sarah.

Mark: This isn't fair!

Judge: You are also ordered to enter a mandatory state rehabilitation program for ninety days.

Mark: You can't force me into rehab!

Judge: Order in the court, or I will cite you for contempt right now!

Mark slammed his fist onto the wooden table, sending his pencil rolling across the floor. Two court bailiffs stepped forward immediately, placing their hands on their belts as a warning. Mark collapsed back into his chair, breathing heavily as he realized his fight was completely over. The judge signed the final decree with a loud stamp, officially ending six years of pain and chaos for Sarah.

David: It’s over, Sarah. You are free.

Sarah: I can finally breathe again.

David: Let’s get out of here and start fresh.

Sarah stood up slowly, looking over at Mark one last time. She felt no hatred toward him anymore, only a deep sense of pity for a man who chose addiction over love. She turned her back on him and walked toward the heavy double doors of the courtroom. David walked beside her, his hand resting gently on the small of her back as they stepped out into the bright afternoon sunlight.
