Evelyn carried the heavy leather pouch down the hallway toward the small utility closet behind the kitchen.
Inside the wooden cabinet stood a heavy steel safe, built directly into the wall during the original construction.
Recessed ceiling lights illuminated the bright scene as she knelt down on the cool hardwood oak floor.
She turned the heavy brass dial left, then right, carefully listening for the faint clicks of the internal locking mechanism.
Mark stood in the doorway, watching her with cold, distant eyes while Sarah paced back and forth in the hall.
Mark: Look at you. Turning dials like a bank robber hiding stolen loot in a movie.
Evelyn: It is safe in here. Fireproof, waterproof, and untouched by legal complications.
Sarah: What legal complications? Dad died ten years ago and left you this entire property tax-free!
Evelyn: Your father left behind debts you never knew about, Sarah. Complex debts that almost destroyed us.
Evelyn pushed the metal door shut with a heavy thud, turning the handle until the mechanism locked completely.
Mark: Dad was an accountant! He did not have hidden debts! Stop making up stories to hide your greed!
Evelyn: Your father was human, Mark. He made mistakes with investments and private loans before he passed away.
Sarah: If there were loans, why did the banks never come for the house or the savings account?
Evelyn: Because I made a deal with his former business partners and paid them off slowly in cash.
Mark let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head as he stepped back into the bright living room.
Mark: That is the worst excuse I have ever heard in my entire life, Mom.
Evelyn: I am telling you the absolute truth! I saved this home from foreclosure three different times!
Sarah: If you saved it, then why keep hiding cash now? Why not help us buy our family car?
Evelyn: Because the final settlement is not finished! If the bank sees cash in an account, they seize it!
Mark pulled his wallet from his back pocket and tossed a five-dollar bill onto the coffee table with disgust.
Mark: Here, add this to your safe. Maybe it will keep you warm when nobody visits you anymore.
