Evelyn stepped through the archway into the kitchen, carrying a folder of legal documents in her hands. She stopped abruptly in total shock as her eyes adjusted to the scene before her.
The island counter was completely covered in a grand meal spread that looked like it belonged in a luxury restaurant. The aromatic steam filled her lungs, instantly triggering memories of her late husband.
Evelyn: What is the meaning of this mess, Maya?
Maya took a step back toward the sink, keeping her hands clasped nervously in front of her.
Maya: It isn't a mess, Evelyn. I cooked dinner for us.
Evelyn: You turned my kitchen into a disaster zone without asking permission!
Maya: I cleaned up everything as I went! Please, just look at the food.
Evelyn walked slowly toward the island counter, her cold gaze scanning the golden rolls and steaming roast beef. She recognized the distinct aroma of rosemary and garlic almost immediately.
Evelyn: Where did you get this recipe?
Maya: Dad wrote it down for me before he passed away. He used to make it for you when you had a bad day.
Evelyn's face stiffened, her eyes flickering with a mixture of pain, anger, and hidden nostalgia. She set her legal documents down on the edge of the counter with a heavy thud.
Evelyn: You think a simple meal changes the fact that you don't belong here?
Maya: I don't want your money or the house, Evelyn. I just want a family.
Evelyn: Family isn't made over a roast dinner, young lady.
Maya: But it's a start! You've been pushing me away ever since Dad died because seeing me reminds you of him!
Evelyn gasped slightly, taken aback by the sudden strength and raw honesty in Maya's voice. The silence between them grew heavy and thick with unexpressed grief.
Evelyn: You know nothing about how I feel.
Maya: I know you miss him just as much as I do. We are both grieving alone in this giant house!
Evelyn looked down at the gleaming silver fork resting beside the white china plate. Her hand trembled slightly as she reached out and picked it up.
Evelyn: I worked so hard to keep this estate running after he left us.
Maya: And I tried to stay out of your way so I wouldn't cause you more stress.
Evelyn: You were always so quiet... I thought you hated me.
Maya: I never hated you. I was just terrified of being kicked out onto the street.
Evelyn froze, looking up into Maya's wide, earnest eyes. She saw the genuine pain and vulnerability that mirrored her own secret fears.
Evelyn: I never meant to make you feel unsafe in your home.
Maya: Just taste the food, Evelyn. That's all I ask for today.
