By ten in the morning, the thirty-seat walnut boardroom at the end of the executive wing was packed with senior department directors and major institutional shareholders.
A tense, suffocating murmur echoed off the paneled walls as David walked into the room, followed closely by Chloe, who clung desperately to his arm.
David: Gentlemen, thank you for assembling on such short notice. There has been a minor administrative misunderstanding regarding our holding structure.
Sitting directly at the center of the conference table, occupying the high-backed leather chair reserved for the board president, was Rachel.
Beside her sat Arthur Vance, along with two senior forensic auditors from PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
Rachel: Please take a seat, David. You are distracting the board members from reviewing the morning balance sheet.
David: Rachel, get out of that chair! You have no formal corporate standing to address my executive board!
Arthur: As the representative of the majority shareholder holding ninety-one percent of voting proxies, Rachel has every legal right to preside over this extraordinary assembly.
David: Marcus! You're the chief operating officer! Explain to these people that I run this firm!
Marcus: Mr. Vance, the legal audit arrived two hours ago. The trust documents are completely authentic. If we disregard the trustee's directives, our commercial operating licenses will be suspended by noon.
David: You coward! You're turning against me after fifteen years of partnership?
Marcus: I have fiduciary duties to the shareholders, David. I won't face federal charges for corporate fraud to protect your ego.
Chloe: This is a coordinated conspiracy! David, tell them to call the police!
Rachel: Actually, Chloe, the police are already downstairs in the lobby. But they aren't here for me.
Chloe froze, her manicured fingers slipping from David's sleeve as her face turned completely white.
Chloe: What... what do you mean? Why would the police be here?
Arthur: Mr. Davis, over the past eighteen months, our forensic accounting team has uncovered four point two million dollars in unauthorized corporate distributions.
David: Those were legitimate executive discretionary bonuses! Approved under my CEO charter!
Arthur: Discretionary bonuses cannot be transferred into offshore accounts registered under your assistant's personal holding company in the Cayman Islands.
A collective gasp rippled through the boardroom as the three institutional fund managers leaned forward in unison.
David: Chloe... what is he talking about? You told me those transfers were for the European logistics supplier retainers!
Chloe: David, don't listen to him! He's trying to turn us against each other!
Rachel: We have the bank wire confirmations right here on the projection screen, Chloe. Four wire transfers, each signed by David using his executive digital key, deposited straight into Davis Capital LLC.
David: Chloe! Did you steal four million dollars from my corporate lines?
Chloe: Your corporate lines? You just heard the lawyers say you don't own a single dime of this company! You're broke, David!
David: You told me you loved me! You told me we were going to build a new life in Monaco!
Chloe: I loved the man who had a private jet and an eighty-million-dollar credit line! I'm not spending my youth comforting an unemployed middle-aged fraud!
David stared at her in utter disbelief, his chest heaving as the illusion he had sacrificed his family for shattered into dust.
Rachel: Well, Chloe, at least you're honest when the money runs dry.
Chloe: Shut up, Rachel! You think you're so smart? Let's see how much money you keep after the forensic audit tears this company apart!
Chloe grabbed her purse from the table and rushed toward the double mahogany doors, but as she reached the threshold, two uniformed detectives stepped into the doorway, blocking her path.
Detective Sullivan: Chloe Davis? We have a warrant for your arrest regarding grand larceny and corporate wire fraud. Please step this way.
Chloe screamed in fury as the cold steel handcuffs clicked shut around her wrists, her frantic protests echoing down the carpeted hallway until the elevator doors slid shut.
David remained standing by the wall, trembling, stripped of his mistress, his status, and his pride in front of thirty people who had once bowed to his every word.
Rachel: Now that our domestic distractions have been removed, gentlemen, let us proceed to agenda item number one: the immediate removal of David Vance as chief executive officer.
David: Rachel... please. Not like this. Let me resign with dignity.
Rachel: You didn't leave me any dignity when you watched movers throw our wedding photo albums into the driveway mud, David.
