The Hammer Hits the Wood

The Boy Broke the Casket to Save Her

Marcus: You insane little monster! What have you done!

Ethan: Look at the wood! Look at what you did to her!

Guest: Oh my God! The casket... it's breaking!

Marcus: Don't look! Everyone back away, he's ruined the service!

The heavy oak lid splintered under the violent force of the blow, crackling loudly like a dry branch snapping in winter. A collective gasp echoed through the room as shards of polished white lacquer flew across the carpet.

Ethan: Mom! Can you hear me! Mom!

Marcus: Get back from there, Ethan!

Woman in Black: Look at his hands... he's bleeding!

Ethan: I don't care! She's inside! I know she's inside!

Marcus: She passed away in her sleep three days ago! You saw the doctor's report!

Ethan: The doctor works for you! He lied! You paid him with the life insurance money!

Marcus: Keep your mouth shut!

Marcus reached inside his tailored black suit jacket, his knuckles turning pale as he gripped a heavy metal object concealed near his chest. The room grew deathly quiet as guests began to realize something was deeply wrong.

Guest: Is that... does he have a gun?

Marcus: Step away from the casket, Ethan. I won't let you ruin her memory in front of everyone.

Ethan: You're scared because you know what's in there!

Woman in Black: Marcus, put that away! What are you doing at a funeral?

Marcus: Everyone stand back! This boy is dangerous! He's off his medication!

Ethan: I never took any medication! You tried to poison me too!

Ethan wedged the claw of the hammer into the freshly splintered crevice of the casket lid. He pulled back with all his tiny body weight, muscles straining under his dark coat as the wood creaked and groaned under the pressure.

Marcus: Stop! Right now!

Ethan: Help me! Someone help me pull it open!

Guest: Look... something moved inside!

Marcus: Nobody move! Stay in your pews!

Marcus raised the black pistol, pointing it directly at the boy's chest. Panic exploded through the funeral hall as high-society guests began ducking behind wooden pews, screams filling the air.

Ethan: Fire it then! Shoot me! But I'm opening this lid!

Marcus: I'm warning you, kid!

Ethan: Mom!

With one final, desperate heave, the top section of the oak casket snapped entirely off its hinges, crashing onto the carpeted floor below.
