Mary: Leo? Sweetheart, what are you doing over here?
Leo: I can't stay over there anymore! Please don't make me go back!
Mary: Oh, my sweet boy, you need to be with your father and the guests.
The silver platter slipped from Mary’s trembling hands, crashing onto the hard marble floor with a deafening metallic clatter. Crystal glasses shattered into hundreds of sparkling pieces, but no one in the room moved to clean it. Mary dropped directly to her knees right into the mess, completely ignoring the broken glass near her shoes. She pulled the sobbing boy into a tight, desperate embrace. Leo buried his face into the fabric of her simple uniform, weeping uncontrollably as his small hands clutched her apron.
Leo: This is wrong, Mommy! You shouldn't be standing back here!
Margaret: What did that child just call her?
Victoria: Did he just say... Mommy?
Eleanor: This must be some kind of terrible mistake or a practical joke.
Gasps rippled through the crowd like a shockwave. Richard Sterling froze where he stood, his face turning pale before flushing with pure fury. He pushed his way through the crowd of aristocrats, his heavy steps echoing against the silence of the hall. Mary held Leo tighter, her own tears finally overflowing and streaming down her worn cheeks. She pressed a gentle kiss against the top of the boy's head, her body trembling under the weight of a secret she had carried in silence for five long years.
Richard: Mary, unhand my son this instant! Have you completely lost your mind?
Mary: He is scared, Mr. Sterling. He just wanted comfort.
Richard: He is a Sterling, and you are hired staff! Get up from the floor immediately!
Leo: Don't yell at her! She's my real mommy, not a servant!
The crowd gasped louder this time. Several women covered their mouths with their hands, and men murmured in total disbelief. Richard stepped closer, his eyes dark with menace as he glared down at the kneeling maid. He raised a hand, pointing a sharp finger toward the back exit door.
Richard: You are fired. Pack your things and get out of my house before I have security throw you out!
Mary: You can fire me from my job, Richard, but you can't fire me from being his mother.
Richard: Silence! You signed an agreement! You have no right to open your mouth in front of these people!
Mary: I signed that paper when I was starving and desperate, but I won't watch my son be raised by a monster anymore!
Leo held onto Mary’s neck with all his strength, refusing to let go. Richard grabbed the boy's arm, trying to pull him away, but Leo kicked his feet and screamed in defiance. The polished image of the wealthy Sterling family was crumbling in seconds right before the city's top elite.
